How is the instrument rating going to work?
An FAA instrument rating does not require going up for a ride with a examiner every year (and shelling out the bucks to do it).
So how is the FAA instrument holder going to convert his IFR to the Cdn one if he did his flight test ride more than 1 year ago?

The US economy is possibly looking at recession in the next year, and some of the latest stats are showing a slow down in the Cdn economy. I give the hiring wave another 6 months, if that. Remember, when the economy starts to go down, and it will, the airlines are the first to feel it. I personally ...

French or English in the Canadian AirForce
I've always wondered what the daily operating language in the CAF is... At Cold Lake is it mainly English?? but if you go to Bagotville it's mainly French??? I'd be interested to know how this plays out with a lot of the guys who may be able to semi understand French (or at least pass the test), but...

Ah missed that... Interesting stuff though... the pilot market is not looking too good in the US and the US economy isn't looking too bright. Their housing market is starting to collapse, and I pray the same thing happens in Canada as I'm in the market for a house  Expect to see more Yanks comi...

They pound it into your head that you will likely never see the inside of an airplane unless your a passenger, or renting one yourself. If BCIT is genuinely straight up with prospective students like this, then they are truly the exception to the rule, and I respect them. No doubt you as an instruc...

Looks like I touched a nerve there, JW. I know the "college boy" mantality. How? Because my little dialogue there, I used to say the same thing myself. Most of us did after being brainwashed by the schools into thinking we were hot sh*t because we graduated from XYZ college. Then we graduated and lo...

I can just hear the BCIT boys nows.... "When I graduate, I'm going straight to Central Mountain Air, but I worry about the PIC time and the ATPL..." "Oh yeah, well I want the PIC time, so I'll be looking for Caravan time for my first job... no doubt when bush operator Bob from Fort Population 150 se...

The only thing there is a "shortage" of is ethics among those who market flight training. When I read and hear some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths, I shake my head. It's like they think we all have 'idiot' written on our foreheads... But then again, I gave the industry my 40K and got no...

So if TC is unable to police the regulations that they are responsible for the onus is on the pilots? C'mon, Cat, see your own signature quote about saying "no". Transport Canada can't have inspectors on-site at every operation in the country 24/7 to hold everyone's hand. No one wants to take respo...

There was a big article in the Vancouver Sun too. They interviewed the father of the Regency pilot who was killed. What amazes me is that the father did not mention how he had to pay $5000 to Regency so his son could fly for free. That part he does not talk about. I'm sorry, there comes a point wher...

A couple points: First, no one can predict the future. There is a good chance that Bird Flu will hit North America sometimes soon, and if that really takes off, then kiss the aviation industry good bye for a couple years. For all you guys who are excited about the wav of new hires at Air Canada, I w...

You sure can tell who the silver-spoon-fed ones are. The ones that didn't have to move out of home, got a job at daddys' buddy's charter company because they were buds back in the day when you got hired at AC with 200 hrs and a fresh IFR. These children just don't understand what it takes to get so...

Unfortunately the liars, crackpots, schemers, dreamers, ego maniacs, criminals, grifters, crazies and charlatans vastly outnumber the the nice people in aviation, and Canadian aviation is no exception. I think the more appropriate questions is: Who is none of the above? And what is it about aviation...

So why don't pilots have a professional association? I don't know. I partly suspect that its due to a lot of people who talk the talk but aren't prepared to walk the walk and actually work to better the industry. I hope someday that changes. 1. Piloting isn't a profession in the technical sense. It...

Rather than take the opportunity that was available to him, this kid took it upon himself to create his own path, worked through at least two bottom-feeder operations (dad scared $hitless for the boy, and begging him to come over to a nice, safe job), before finally getting to where we all hope to ...

What about the guy whose Dad or family relative gets him in the door? I've seen it a lot... It makes a world of difference if your Dad is a somebody in aviation. Is Nepotism fair? Is it fair that some guys just happen to be born to the right people? The idea that people are bad pilots because they p...

Ralliart, The topic has been done to death, and I generally agree with what you're saying. My point was that compared to what else is going on out there, Regency/Sonic is still pretty tame. I showed my wife the EagleJet website and explained how pilots pay big money to work for free. She said pilots...
