Re: Haven't been around for a while

Nice pics!

I do have a question about the second picture... What is that round thing mounted on the bottom of the engine cowling? I have been wondering for quite some time!

Thanks.

Re: Bird Strikes- Scenario

I'm guessing under the right conditions I could be knocked out unconscious eh? I found out while doing some reading on birdstrikes that on very rare occasions, people have even been killed! (See: http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=57139) While filming aerial sequences low over a la...

Re: TC's definition of X-Country?

XC time requires you to land at an aerodrome SEPARATE from your point of departure. The whole 25 mile rule does not apply to XC time....but distance req'd to file a flight plan I think this was mentioned earlier, but wouldn't this mean that those around the world flights are not considered xc? 26,3...

Re: Helmets and Fixed-wing

So i guess if 71% of birdstrikes are at 500' AGL we should all wear a helment for take off and landing? No, I don't really think would make sense seeing that for the average pilot, such a low percentage of time is spent at that altitude. I was suggesting that head gear may not be a bad idea for the...

Interim CofR Question

I was reading about the CofR in CARS, and am confused by their wording. (3) The interim registration of an aircraft referred to in subsection (1) expires on the earliest of (a) the last day of the three-month period following the date of the transfer of any part of the legal custody and control of t...

Approved Calculators for Written Exam

Hi, The transport canada website says you may bring an approved calculator or flight computer to your written exam, however it only lists approved flight computers. What types of regular pocket calculators can I bring? Would I be allowed to bring a graphing calculator? Not that I need to graph anyth...

Re: Scientists: AC flt that plunged, injured 10, hit wave of air

Thanks for your post, and I'm tempted to agree. If these 'science experts' are anything like the aviation experts I see in the media and television, well, I won't hold my breath... If Bruce Sutherland isn't considered an expert in his field, I don't think anyone is. I don't know how much he knows a...

Re: Scientists: AC flt that plunged, injured 10, hit wave of air

There are many other types of waves in the atmosphere other than mountain waves, like interfacial waves which travel between air layers of differing densities. Or gravity waves....see below: http://www-misr.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/images/historic/PIA04349-small.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXnkze...

Really, what Conky doesn't have is an O.C.

Would it be considered that the same limitations apply?

Probably not for 702, but I'm not sure.
My bad, I missed that.

Re: Any difference between 3 yr or 4 yr Univ. Degree??

Which school did you go to? As far as I know a standard degree is 40 courses, but a BSc is still a BSc no matter how many years it took. IMHO not like a bio degree is any better than a general science degree with respect to aviation anyway!

Re: Man charged after laser pointed at Edmonton police chopper

So if you shoot at an aircraft using a .22 which has virtually no chance of bringing it down it's ok? Sorry, that wasn't what I was trying to imply. I think pointing any type of laser at an aircraft is a very bad idea. I was suggesting that some people are trying to justify it being okay because th...

Re: Man charged after laser pointed at Edmonton police chopper

I don't think this is all about the small pocket laser that every 14 year old had at one point. You can buy lasers online that can be seen for over 100 miles (granted they cost thousands of dollars but still!). Caution: Class IIIb lasers produce sufficient amount of energy to cause personal injury a...

Re: Man charged after laser pointed at Edmonton police chopper

The comments on the CBC page are kind of scary! The helicopter in Calgary every night doesn't matter the time, flies in circles around my neighbourhood, very low, very loud, wakes my children. Complaining does no good. If I had an RPG I would use that over a laser pointer. And I do live in a...

Re: Helmets and Fixed-wing

Is there any reason other than culture as to why a helicopter pilot would wear a helmet and a fixed wing doing specialty flying would not? Putting bird strikes aside, what about actual crashes. Wouldn't wearing a helmet be beneficial in either case? On another note, I read that some helmets give 50d...
