Re: Who Wants to Fly WJ
Wtf is this real? https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/1q44a7a/westjet_changed_their_seats_and_this_is_how_much/ Sadly it is. They went with the smallest seat pitch currently used anywhere in the world, 28 inches. 4 inches less than current config. And 1 inch less than RyanAir. Due t...

Re: The TA
Im eagerly awaiting road shows. Leaning on a Yes because there is some good stuff here. Pay could be better but at least starting pay isn't as bad as Air Canada. Definitely happy I've decided to stick it out compared to what the Air Canada pilots were able to negotiate. Must be terrible with those ...

Re: Encore hiring 2026
WestJet just announced they’re canceling all hiring/upgrades/flow for 2026. Does that follow through for Encore as well or just mainline though? I think it’s company wide. More and more cost-cutting from the Onex overlords. Likely once AC start hiring OTS again Encore will be decimated and they’ll ...

Re: WJ Hiring
My guess is we will see the next round of hiring and upgrades closer to 2029 when the new 787s are due to arrive. Max deliveries appear to be mainly fleet replacements for aging NGs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an occasional new hire class to replace FOs leaving for Porter and AC. Certainly if CA...

Re: Pilots thinking of leaving WJ due to 16 year upgrades
Add another 5-6 years to be a block holder. is it the same case in YEG as YYC? So 10 yrs currently to upgrade at both bases and then reserve for a few years after that at both bases? 10 years to hold a left seat, although that will be increasing with no upgrades in 2026. Currently 2014 hires are ju...

Re: Pilots thinking of leaving WJ due to 16 year upgrades
I believe they downgraded around 70 captains in YYZ (not sure on that final number) with the reduction bid. Planned upgrades system wide for 2026 was 22, now we’ve bold told that will be reduced due to the AR pilot ruling. 17 new Maxs arriving next year but not extra left seats. So lots of NGs being...

Awaiting arbitration next August. We’ve been told most/all of the 22 upgrades planned are gonna be canceled for 2026 now that the ARs are staying.
Re: WJ Hiring
Hate to tell you this, but Westjet is likely going to hire much less pilots than originally planned. This is due to a reversal in the plan to force all of the age 65+ pilots out. The company has been ordered to keep them rostered until a ruling can be given next year some time. Sounds like the hiri...

Highly agree. AC would be a second choice. WestJet only a consideration if planning to live where Porter and AC don’t have bases. You will likely never see a left seat at WJ.

Re: Recall of MEC Chair & Vice Chair
Once again you don't get it. A11 pilots do a bunch of unpaid work, just one example: the entire ATO process is completely unpaid. Where are you getting this? Instructors, check pilots and seat fill volunteers for an ATO event are all paid. It's the candidate requiring extra training that is unpaid....

Re: Hiring Again?
I think we will see hiring in 2026, at the very least due to attrition as junior FOs leave for AC where it isn’t a 10+ year wait for a left seat. Once the new 787s start to show up (anyone’s guess, 2-4 years depending on how optimistic/pessimistic you are) I think we will see some upgrades again and...

Re: Flow timeline after new fleet orders?
Out east pilots are also working full blocks in the mid 80's from anecdotal evidence asking around. Double time for overtime has been offered for many Toronto based pairings lately. It is evident that this rebalancing was to knock junior Sunwing captains from their seats to allow Westjet FO's to bi...

Re: Recall of MEC Chair & Vice Chair
The LEC recall resolutions for the ACA MEC chair were driven by the pilots that thought ACA could have done better by going on strike and also figured that they would have been immune to any government/CIRB orders to return to work if they had walked. Now that it’s obvious that striking isn’t reall...

Re: ANR headset for 737 NG/Max
I’ve used the Uflymic for about 6 years now. Used the QC35 and now QC45 setup. Can honestly say it’s absolute garbage. The 45 is even worse, noticeable echo when talking on the intercom. Their email support is great, but they just say that’s an issue they know about. In short, buy a proper headset i...

Had a buddy interview there a few years ago and he said it was garbage. They even paid a reduced salary until your line check was complete. I imagine it’s still crap judging by their latest ad with signing bonuses for a type rating.

Re: AR program Did I read that right?
It is absolutely possible to allow AR pilots into Encore; merge the companies. The problems that WestJet has are caused by their desire to spend a dollar to save a penny. Judging by your posts, WestJet sure has made you bitter. Why don't you just go to Air Canada to help the tears? Not bitter, accu...

Re: Why WestJet?
That hasn’t been true for many years What part isn’t? All new upgrades go on reserve. Until they can hold a block. WJ has had reserve for years. I’m sure a WJ pilot can chime in with the details. Correct. YYC it’s currently 12 years for an upgrade, but 17 years to hold a block as a captain. So lots...

Re: Why WestJet?
In YVR at AC you could hold any YVR position shortly after the course (NB FO and RP). It wouldn't be a crazy wait for WB FO or NB CA either. On the last bid the junior NB C and 777 FO was around 3700 and 787 FO 4600. Interesting numbers thanks. At WJ right now it takes 10 years seniority to be the ...

Re: Why WestJet?
If you're YVR you'd be out of your mind to go to WJ. Just looking at the latest list, most junior YVR captain at WJ is a Mar2013 hire. Must junior block holder is a Jun2010. So 15 years to even be off reserve as a captain on a 737. We have zero growth, and only aircraft orders are for a few max8s an...

All approved under the FAA because that agency actually moves with the times. I don’t think TC has updated their banned medications handbook for about 30 years. WestJet has predictably used the Sunwing merger, and the increased international flying that brings, as the excuse it needs to rid itself of the expense of the AR program. No one is surprised, and many people saw this coming.

They have a code added to their name on the flight plan so that the captain/dispatch/crew Sked is aware. In the same way an Age restricted pilot/initial FO/new captain currently has.
Non-ATPL FOs won’t be paired with new captains with less than 150 hours in the left seat.

Re: Misc WJ questions
I can’t speak to 1. 2 depends on how many years you have until retirement. 3. Most junior YYC captain is 11 years, currently 17 years to be off reserve as a YYC captain (these numbers from the updated pilot list for April). I would expect 15 years to be an optimistic/realistic upgrade time for YYC a...
