For planning purposes, I'd be more worried about the world economy and its affect on aviation over the next few years.
Remember India? The Land of the Great Pilot Shortage?

O'Niel, Fug this Kelowna Pilot dude. Go for your dream and never look back. As they say....no guts ....no glory. Life is too short not to take a chance in the hope that your dream will come true. PS. Do yourself a favour and try to weed out the naysayers of this industry. Typically, the naysayers a...

Re: Aviation in Canada - What's happening these days?
Schools are still looking for instructors. And it has always been hard for 200 hour lads to find jobs. Right now that may be the case. Six months from now may be a totally different story. Don't assume that getting an instructor job is a given. In the years following 9-11, the flight training indus...

... and every bust is followed by another boom. ... a bear market is followed by a bull market. ... time will tell. That's generally right... the question is how long till the next upturn? What does history say? Usually maybe 5 to 6 years in Canadian Aviation. That last real downturn in Canada star...

Re: Aviation in Canada - What's happening these days?
Aviation in Canada has gone to the point where pilot's are name calling each other on a forum... seriously. Give it up you guys. Aviation in Canada can get a lot worse than that. To put this thread back on track, if you want to know where Canadian aviation will be, just look at the United St...

Re: We are in the perfect storm
All the while the flying schools will be pushing the "upcoming world pilot shortage" I heard a rumor that ATAC is planning on bringing "Baghdad Bob" out of retirement to come work for them to counter the negative press the aviation industy is getting. All this bad press has gotta be hurting enrollm...

Re: Bye Bye Zoom
True, but it boils down to a rock and a hard place situation...It's about time the travelling public had to pay the actual operational costs of air travel. Its a priviledge not a right to fly across the country.
Raise fares and a lot of people will simply stay home and not fly...

Re: Bye Bye Zoom
Perhaps Zoom Air can reorganize. They're gone. No one their right mind would buy a Zoom ticket now. Way too risky. If I had to put everything that's happening now in historical context, I'd say the industry is right were it was a couple months before 9-11. The fall slowdown will be the 9-11 event, ...

Re: Bye Bye Zoom
I think the music just stoped, or at least the volume was cut in half! From what I've read, most of the "experts" are saying that once the summer season is over, which it almost is, that that's when the airlines are going to start really feeling the hit. Sadly, Zoom is just one of the first to go o...

Re: Missinippi Air Now Requires Training Bond
Times ain't so bad in our our domestic industry, in the the recent mid-term though the latest cycle has yet to manifest itself fully (as per any industry veteran's recollection of past cycles). Canada generally behind lags behind the United States by a year, give or take. Those who argue that Canad...

Re: Missinippi Air Now Requires Training Bond
You seem to believe that your generation were better aviators, and that employers were more generous. I find both ideas hard to believe. It's a statistical fact that wage and working conditions for airline pilots have eroded very significantly since, I think it was de-regulation. There's a chart so...

Re: We are in the perfect storm
Here's a secret:Airlines around North America are in trouble and yet some companies continue to hire/expand.
The airlines will hire up until the last day, and then start laying off the next.
It's bizarre in many ways - but that's aviation for you.

Re: We are in the perfect storm
However, If WJ is just keeping its head above water, AC will probably drown. Agree 100 percent. But, frankly, the aviation game is so loopy and volatile, that I'm hesitant to make any kind of predictions other than that the industry is going into a slump phase. Who the winners and losers will be is...

Re: Multi Crew Licence, what a farce!
The only way I could see Air Canada doing it is if the MCL works for $15,000 per year or less. Frankly, with the way things are going in the airline industry (high fuel costs, slumping economy), the cynic in me says Air Canada might pull a stunt like this to reduce labor costs and associated overhea...

Re: Multi Crew Licence, what a farce!
Yeah, Transport will hire them... I could see that happening. The same way some flight schools will "hire" everyone single one of their instructor students to make their employment stats look good even though the "employee" spends 8 hours a day sitting around waiting for a student and not getting pa...

Re: Multi Crew Licence, what a farce!
Just read the "dont mary a pilot" thread, it even rags on about the MCL, interesting take on this scam to say the least! That article was written in the European/UK context. The European/UK and Canadian context are totally different. But that's a distinction I get the feeling that a lot of the indu...

Re: We are in the perfect storm
Well, not everyone saw the 'perfect storm' coming. There was a tremendous amount of mania, particularly in the housing market, that "prices will go up forever" because "this time it's different." You even saw the same kind of thinking of this forum... the hiring boom will last forever because "this ...

Re: Multi Crew Licence, what a farce!
I think the MCL won't last; it's one of those things that sounds great in theory on paper, but like a lot of theories it's just totally cut-off from reality and has no place in Canada. First, there is no Pilot Shortage. There never has been. What there was for a couple years was a temporary spike in...

Re: career choice
I'd go the college route. Don't rush it. Extend your training out and avoid as much debt as possible. Frankly, your timing is terrible. Starting flight training is like investing... you should start/buy at the 'peak of pessimism' and wait/sell at the 'peak of optimism'. (It's like Warren Buffet for ...

Re: Multi Crew Licence, what a farce!
Well, in Europe and Asia it's very common for 250 hour guys to be the FO on Airbuses. The system seems to work for them. Done properly, it's safe. The thing though is that the MCL has no place in the Canadian context... that the MCL could even be seriously discussed in the Canadian context is indica...
