Re: Jazz YVR AME opinions

I enjoyed my time there. Spent 2 years with them. I had been in London and took a transfer to get out of heavy maintenance. Ended up leaving so I could get back to Ontario, couldn't see myself spending the rest of my life in Vancouver. I have heard that things have changed and morale has taken a hit...

Getting back to flying

Hi all I'm interested in people's advice regarding getting back to flying after several years (sort of) on the ground. I got my ppl in 2007, about 2 months before I went away to college for Aircraft Maintenance. To make a long story slightly less long, I flew a few times, then didn't fly for over 4 ...

Common Mistakes, shortcomings and Standard Practices

Hello everyone I'm working on putting together a presentation/document regarding common mistakes we (As AME's) see, standard practices that people don't seem to know (or know, but don't understand) or things that people just don't seem to know, but we wish they did. I'm aiming to put something toget...

Re: Things to keep in mind as an apprentice?

With regards to tools, my personal experience was that everything I had to get through college, was enough to get me started on the job. If I didn't have something, I'd seek out someone in the hangar who did have a suitable tool, and borrow it, once. The collection of tools I have is modest compared...

Re: Apprentice AME looking for advice

Have you considered overseas work? Voyageur hires fresh apprentices if you're willing to work in Africa, great experience. AvCanada is a great source, check it daily, or several times a day, and apply to everything you're remotely qualified for. Something will work out. Could try contacting a contra...

Re: Airport/Airpark/Aerodrome Expansion

Hope things go through with this, I've only been there once (assuming this is Guelph) but it's a nice little spot, and sure has potential to grow into more than it is. With GA airports closing it's nice to see one potentially growing!

Re: So You're a Quart Low

For the amount of work involved (you already have the cowl open, rag in hand, it takes 10 seconds!) why not check it again? Why do you check the fuel gauges after fueling if you know how much you put in? I do the same with my car, or even my lawn mower! I'm working on a CRJ now after being mostly on...

Re: Who are you?

Hummed back and forth about which to pick like others. Started out on here as an Enthusiast, then got my private pilot license, now I'm an AME. I'm still very much an enthusiast, but in the end I went with the career option over the hobby option.

Re: New apprentice tool questions

First off, to answer the question about the SAIT program/graduates. My experience has been it's more up to the individual than the program. I'm by no means a seasoned veteran, I only graduated 5 years ago myself, however in that time I've met and worked with many people from across the country that ...

Re: AME log book submission

I handed in my logbook in Abbotsford, while I lived in Tsawwassen. I handed it in there because everyone said they'd get through it faster. About a week after I submitted it I got a letter in the mail saying it was being sent to Richmond as it was geographically closer. So in my attempt to save time...

Re: Suggestions for Toolbox?

I had a rolling crappy tire tool box that I bought when I started college, and used at my first job, Jazz, both in heavy and when I worked in line. As a low seniority non-ACA I went on 2 road trips. It really depends what job you get when you graduate. My opinion would be something on wheels in most...

Re: New Grad in Ontario needing some advice

Realize this is a slightly out of date topic, sorry, little late to the party. Guessing by your name you're at Canadore? Take a trip over to Voyageur and apply for an overseas position. Every company has it's downsides but I'm quite happy working with them, been to the DRC and South Sudan in the 1.5...

Flight Safety e-learning

Anyone done any of the online pt6 courses that FS offers online? Interested in doing the large pt6 familiarization course, but it's $485 USD and don't want to throw that away only to find out it's a little too basic. These are what I'm talking about http://www.flightsafety.com/elearning/pwcenginetra...

Re: Mohawk VS Centennial College

I had been considering Centennial but was told by many people in the field not to even think about going there, was strongly encouraged to go to Canadore. I had my heart set on Centennial because it was closer to home (Hamilton at the time) and a very good friend of mine was going there. Thankfully ...

Re: Painted hangar floors

I'm a fan of painted floors, worked at places that have had both, and aside from looking a lot nicer, from a maintenance perspective I found it helps a lot. As someone said earlier it makes the whole hangar seem brighter, and I found it a lot easier to find dropped parts on the painted floor. I supp...

Looks like the staff approved it, 91% vote in favour. Would be nice if YHM got in on some of the action, would be even nicer if another airline doesn't coincidentally take interest in YHM at the same time, undercut them, and pull out when the competition is gone. http://www.thespec.com/news/business...

Re: Which AME course to do

I graduated from the M course at Canadore in 2009, great school, great instructors, nothing bad to say about the school. Would highly recommend it, though as I said I took the M program so can't really advise about the E program. Don't know where you live, but I enjoyed living in North Bay, not too ...

I used CARs for the AME and wrote my exam yesterday, it helped out a lot. I got my copy at Aviation World... I think you can order it online from carsfortheame.com. Many questions on the actual exam were very close to ones in the book, it definitely helps focus you on what to study. I read through t...

Sorry, I realize this topic seems to have run it's course, just wanted to add my $.02. Yes, Vintage Wings has one being worked on. The pilot of CWH's Lysander on it's first flight was actually Rob Erdos, a Vintage Wings (and NRC) pilot. Great demonstration of the cooperation between the two great organizations. Wouldn't it be something to see two Lysanders in formation some day soon??...

The Westland Lysander at Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum flew for the first time this week. There are pictures here http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30390 .
