Re: This 1500 hours for copilots in usa
It's not that the military training is so much better, it's the bar that is set so much higher. And the training is for the job to be done. Remember the good old days when there used to be harder selection processes at the major's? When the training was much harder and time consuming? Now it's all q...

Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
Eric Janson, I find your insight very... in the lack of a better description, scary. But I do have a question. What is the dynamic in the flight deck in this Asiana accident, where you have a captain and a TRAINING captain supervising the captain? Does the same apply? Do not question the captain? Ju...

L.O.S.A. kills! “The first step in achieving SA involves perceiving the status, attributes, and dynamics of relevant elements in the environment. The pilot needs to accurately perceive information about his/her aircraft and its systems (airspeed, position, altitude, route, direction of flight, etc.)...

Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
The last 5 hits on flightaware reveal speed (not airspeed), all made with-in that last minute of "11:27" not including the actual impact, late 11:27. Not sure about accurracy there ... The first 2 hits of those 5 show speed only 145kts to 141kts while down 200ft in the interval. The next few second...

Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
It's true what they told me... Airline-flying is 99% boredom, 1% Ho-Lee-Fuk. It is a problem that, for a profession where everything depends on proficiency for that 1%, there is not enough emphasis on training on "what's it doing now?". It's all about what it's doing when we pilots do it right... I ...

Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
It may come down to the pilot not understanding what was set via the MCP. If he had 137 set and LVL CHG the flight director would command a descent with auto-throttles at idle thrust maintaining 137. If this was the case and he pulled the nose up once called low on the PAPIs the speed would decay a...

From Avherald: On Jul 9th 2013 the NTSB reported in their third press conference based on pilot interviews, that they were requested to maintain 180 KIAS until 5nm out, then extended the flaps to landing configuration of 30 degrees (160 KIAS max speed), they were high descending through 4000 feet, s...

Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
I am gonna put my money on lack of FMA-awareness, as in "assumed the A/T would protect the airspeed". Lack of situational awareness, as in focusing on "lateral drift" and "vertical positioning" and not including airspeed in their process. Culture? I don't know... You have a training captain not able...

That's an interesting concept... 2 guys, one with 12k+, the other almost 10k total time, knew how to fly an airplane until Saturday morning. Then, all of a sudden they didn't anymore...
