Re: Caravan in YMM
Putting out flaps doesn't stretch the glide but it stretches the flare. Putting them down at the right time could be helpful when short of a runway by 500 metres. He's a very experienced pilot and everyone is ok so it looks to me like he made good decicions in getting to the ground safely regardless...

Re: Leaning mixture
The original poster is a new student pilot. His question was a primary question. K.I.S.S. We, and instructors do not have to demonstrate our knowlege. Just answer his question. You're right, I was mistaken by his question and assumed he wanted to learn something but in reevaluating his question he ...

Re: Leaning mixture
There was more than one C150 that had valves burned out because students were taught the pull it out an inch on the 152. http://www.avweb.com/news/pelican/182155-1.html?redirected=1 A cylinder in your piston aircraft engine flunks its compression check, with lots of leakage past the exhaust valve. ...

Re: Leaning mixture
I was over on PPrune and came across the leaning mixture topic and want to share what one poster had to say.. The reason for your confusion is that few people know anything about this subject. No instructor I've ever met (or got anywhere near) does. Plenty of owners of planes with engines whose mana...

Re: Leaning mixture
For lean of peak... completely irrelevant for flight school aircraft. While it may not have use in flight school aircraft, I think it's relevance is the understanding. Once you understand whats happening in LOP, you will not have an issue leaning ROP. It's not just as simple as the term; it takes a...

Remember boys and girls control issues = mayday I very much agree. For some reason I feel like emergencies and the use of mayday is defined by being in a situation where you have already lost control. Personally I like to redefine an emergency as a deteriorating situation that requires intervention...

At the risk of throwing a baseball bat in the wheels of a forward moving bicycle that is this discussion, what's better, lean of peak or rich of peak leaning?

Because like he said, either way you will have to do a ride and the ride can renew the rating. I've wondered this same thing before and can't think of a valid reason why it would make a difference. It does seam a little smoother to have it current tho and to avoid the people who would throw the resu...

ok just had to check if we had to write in code or if it would get censored.
I don't think it's super secret code you're using so I don't know whats being saved by not being right out with it.

The Nigerians are pretty generous people. I heard after Nigeria was eliminated from the world cup the Nigerian captain personally offered to refund all the expenses of fans that travelled to Brazil. He said he just needs their bank details and pin numbers to complete the transaction.

I'm a little sad, ahramin, that you completely passed over my double entendre.
I thought I was going to steal the show with that one!
Comedic timing is what it's supposed to be all about.

Re: intro flight discovery flight
I heard of a guy once who finished his entire ppl by doing 45 "special-offer" intro flights at 45 different flight schools. I call BS on that. Who would sign him off for his cross country and solos? I doubt they covered spiral dives in those intro flights regardless of how many you would have elsew...

Re: Air Tindi Pilot "Hero" for Flying into FRDZ
Glad everyone is OK . Like any incident it will be evaluated so someone can learn what the mistake was and how not to do it again. Apparently people can't learn or this thread wouldn't exist... I don't think that's very fair to say. We don't all have the accumulated knowledge of the past in us by d...

Re: Air Tindi Pilot "Hero" for Flying into FRDZ
Does anyone know how much experience this pilot had? Was it his first winter as pic? That's a good question. He learned a lot out of this experience I'm sure and I wish we had a supportive group that could allow him to talk about it non punitively. I can just imagine his morning getting ready for t...

Re: Air Tindi Pilot "Hero" for Flying into FRDZ
I realize I probably diluted the message of my previous post by including three different thoughts in it, so I want write one part again to separate the one message that I feel strongest about: In thinking about this situation I feel like I carry a role as a fellow Pilot and perhaps sometimes I loos...

Re: TSB Investigation into 703 fatalities
There was a comment on another thread that I thought would be a good suggestion in regards to Wx with 703 which I feel is a weakness. It was from the thread about the Air Tindi flight into FZDZ the other day. http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=100095 everything is dumped on the pilo...

Re: Air Tindi Pilot "Hero" for Flying into FRDZ
This is just another example of 703 rules and philosophy gone wrong -- everything is dumped on the pilot's shoulders which increases the possibility of something going sideways -- you have to ask yourself if this would have happened if they were using level 2 dispatch system -- an extra set of eyes...

Re: Radio phraseology
I think those are all good ways to say it. Usually I just say "ABC clear of the active, Sumplace" if it's uncontrolled and for controlled the same as mentioned by Big Pistons Forever. The structure of who you are, where you are, and what you're doing can't be beat. Ground ABC, Alpha for the North ra...
