Re: Westjet 737 Gear collapse in SXM today

I can't even understand the Westjet pilot when he speaks. Is there an English proficiency issues with some of their pilots? Disrespectful comment. Consider that listening to LiveATC transmissions like what we heard is not like being in the tower or airplane. From the info that we have right now, th...

Re: Westjet 737 Gear collapse in SXM today

Well it’s a French pilot sooo… hard landing tracks. This was an experienced crew who are now dealing with difficult circumstances, and it could have happened to any one of us. I hope they are given all the courtesy and respect going forward by the company, and colleagues whether from Westjet or any...

Re: Westjet Buys 67 Boeing Planes

Non of the maxes are even close to being on the chopping block. All the 700's are leaving and the 800's will slowly be phased out over the coming years. We'll probably still have a bunch in 2030 so they will be around in numbers for a while yet. I believe we will eventually exercise all options.......

Re: Westjet Buys 67 Boeing Planes

I will echo posts above, thank you -TSRA for your contribution here. Nukem, not so much. I also like to look at numbers based on realistic assumptions to get an idea of where the ship is going. Right now this likely means indefinite hiring at Westjet, which is a good thing for everybody. Maybe manag...

Re: Flow timeline after new fleet orders?

Mainline is not overstaffed. If they were, pilots would have much cushier schedules, double time wouldn't be offered for overtime, and reserves wouldn't be called all the time. You'll find that WJ has very different definitions of what it means to be overstaffed or understaffed and the degrees ther...

Re: Flow timeline after new fleet orders?

Out east pilots are also working full blocks in the mid 80's from anecdotal evidence asking around. Double time for overtime has been offered for many Toronto based pairings lately. It is evident that this rebalancing was to knock junior Sunwing captains from their seats to allow Westjet FO's to bi...

Re: Westjet Buys 67 Boeing Planes

Everybody seems to have high block hours, so I don't think the airline is that well staffed considering more are leaving due to the reduction bid out east. Supposedly hiring is to commence in January, and my guess is it will continue for the foreseeable future.

Re: How many of you are actually quitting after integration?

Perhaps some to Porter as direct entry captains as well, especially based out east. I'm sure there are plenty of Westjetter's looking to get out as well due to the overall stagnation and the reduction bid in YYZ

Re: Why WestJet?

The 1000hrs on WJ aircraft requirement has been in place for a number of years. Ask any encore pilot who stayed at encore for a lengthy period of time and then came to WJ and tried to upgrade before they met the same requirement. That being said, I'm not sure why it is in place for SWG FOs who are ...

Re: Why WestJet?

Let's not forget that suddenly Sunwing FO's need to fly 1,000 hours at Westjet before being able to upgrade, regardless of any other factor. That would include downgraded captains Sunwing captains I presume. With planned hiring of 400 pilots next year (according to management for what it's worth), t...

Re: Why WestJet?

To elaborate a little bit, there's a very strong sense that this aptly named "Sunwing Reduction Bid" was really designed to downgrade junior Sunwing captains who as mentioned above were "out of place." I get why Westjet pilots are unhappy with aspects of the arbitration, but it feels as though effo...

Re: Why WestJet?

Sunwing FO's were allowed to bid for upgrades, if their seniority allowed of course. They secretly changed the upgrade requirements after the fact, and a revised bid award had taken away the upgrade for the Sunwing FO's that held left seat. It's unbelievable how management and the Westjet union are...

Re: Why WestJet?

Max auto is right. Though I am wondering why management did so ? it was pretty dirty, maybe the Sunwing captains should all be downgraded. What a shame they didn't keep two OC's, similar to rouge, one contract, two OC's with the ability to bid mainline or LCC/Leisure just like AC/Rouge. Morale woul...

Re: AR program Did I read that right?

I wonder if the over 65 pilots could argue that WJ was able to do this without undue hardship for several years when it was below a certain percentage of the flights(say 10%) and therefore in the future, perhaps a certain percentage could still be reserved for them. That might mean that there is on...

Re: 150 Pilots forced move out of YYZ

I think it's fair to say that Sunwing Airlines itself was not designed to be profitable, but rather to reduce costs for the Sunwing Group, and as such increase profits overall. Onex (Westjet) bought Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations as an opportunity to merge Sunwing Airlines into Westjet Airli...

Re: Why WestJet?

Is westjet going to have socialized bidding in the next contract? Probably. Westjet does things differently, and in many ways that's a great thing. But many of their pilots don't like to consider how things are done elsewhere, which is why it took so long to get rid of grooming the cabins over ther...

Re: The Latest on Layoffs

The only part that seems weird is instead of junior Captains having to move bases to keep their seat, they're now being allowed to downgrade in their own base but retain Captain pay, and status (title and keep building Captain pay seniority I think). It means the entire burden of the reduction bid ...
