Re: Nav Canada & safety concerns
So apparently a few people didn't realize my post was just a joke - ie solving a very simple conflict described in the overdramatized way the media does aviation reporting. I figured the hospital and orphanarium would have made it obvious, but guess not. Sorry to those offended, confused, or simply ...

Re: Nav Canada & safety concerns
Why don't you amaze us then, I don't see what you are trying to get at here. Well here's one that didn't make the news: The other day, two airplanes entered our sector and would have come within two miles of each other! I'm just a trainee, but the licensed controller beside me did _nothing_ other t...

Re: Unpaid initial training: strategies?
Another factor to consider is the success rate. My course had 40% make the floor. The other courses I've seen are about the same, maybe a touch higher (this is only about 3 courses, so take it for what it is worth). I'm not sure about the success rate on the floor, but at a guess the overall pass ra...

Re: Unpaid initial training: strategies?
IFR training for me was 10 months unpaid. I got a student line of credit from TD and was able to withdraw 10k from my RRSP under the lifelong learning plan. Good luck. Overall the training periods for IFR, at least in Toronto, are longer than they quote. Sean is definitely in the Toronto speciality...

Re: Radar Coverage
Westbound we will have you radar at 4500' both ways. I used to fly that route a couple of times each summer. It has been 2 years, and Braun would know better than me, but I seem to recall a small gap - only around 20 miles. Thought that was true at 4500 but maybe just 35. Anyway, it is a small gap ...

Re: Q about navigation databases
There is (or was) an electronic copy of the CFS that used to be available 4-5 years ago to certain government departments (dnd, maybe others). All the chart data in Canada is copyrighted (held by the gov/queen iirc) unlike in the US where it is considered in the public domain. So in the US you can h...

Re: FSS to VFR overstaffing offers
Also hopefully if you get VFR you don't get Braun as an OJI, he seems to want people to check out real bad. That's a bit harsh, Hooj. It is only realistic to say that there is no guarantee of a license in any Nav Can training - FSS included. Braun didn't say nothin' about people not deserving to ch...

Re: Flying vs. ATC
ATC recruits do a much shorter initial training course than FSS and then start getting the AI-00 paycheck while doing the 11/2-2 year checkout at a center. <snip> But once 'students' get to the centers they become employees at AI-00 (lowest ATC pay scale) and start the check out. I think your infor...

Re: Refusal of Clearance due to Ice Accumulation?
Who or what made you aware of this? Are you sure it was ATC that was able to refuse the clearance and not TC that could tell us to deny a clearance? I've never heard of it myself and not sure how we'd determine if the wing was contaminated. It's usually hard enough to see if the gear is down, let a...

Nice thread!! In response to the original question. The controller was not fined. I was sitting next to him the night it happened. He unplugged...listened to the tapes...got a chat with management...and then came back to have the p*** taken out of him by all his sympathetic terminal mates. I spent ...

Re: Hiring Pools
Keep in mind that the process can take a long time: 3 to 4 months to get through the screening, then up to 1.5 years to get assigned to a course. It might be less, but I'd suggest applying now if you think you might want to do it a year or more from now. You can always postpone if they offer you a c...

: Why a pilot would report that he's had a dual vacuum pump failure is beyond me. Even if we know what it is, we still don't know what he needs. Don't tell us what's gone wrong and make us try and figure out the best course of action, just tell us you have an equipment failure and what we should do...

Re: FSS traffic advisories
The occurence summary gives the answer. In the advisory given to FFZN, the conflicting traffic (FYZS) was not included. However it's likely both aircraft were aware of the other due to listenening out on the MF as well as hearing themselves being given as traffic to other aircraft departing. Okay, ...

On the IFR course, the exam is at the end of the first week. It is very similar to the final assessment on the CD. If you can do that, you should do well on the ITA exam.

its kinda the same as pilots enroute saying "any conflicting aircraft please advise". Well it does give the pilots a reason to say the call sign again: "conflicting please advise <ident>". So doing the math on this $50 per person thingy...
There are like 2-300 controllers per ACC? And the contribution is from everyone in the centre?
That would be one heck of a $10,000 endangered-species-skin leather coat.

I can't imagine you'd need to know the ceiling. It would vary so much with current weight etc anyway. The weight catagory... maybe eventually. The Natsim-PC simulator on the IFR generic course seems to give the weight catagory (suffix to the aircraft ident). Not sure about the real radar. There is n...

Re: need advice on math problems in aptitude test?
Personally, I think is possible to prepare somewhat by practicing. Even when you are apt at something, the first question is going to take longer/more thinking than the 100th. One trick for numerical estimation is to just look at the first digit or two. Eg mentally convert 121.45 x 71.22 to 120 x 70...

There is one multiple choice exam near the beginning on the pre-course material, but every single Nav Canada exam you write (until the KVT right before qualification) are either long answer or fill in the blanks. There are NO multiple choice MANOPS exams during the ab-initio course. Okay, that make...

Verbatim. Separation of aircraft is not based on, nor satisfied by, "intent". Maybe I wasn't clear here professor - sorry. Obviously you have to know the rules rather than the "gist". I was getting at what scrambled_legs said - the difference between comprehension and knowing the rules and conditio...

Yes, thanks for the info guys.
So do they really get you to memorize Manops stuff word for word? Or is it more like learning the intent (plus the numbers and stuff) rather than the wording?
