Re: 1952 Air Force Day

That Frank Luke was some character, wild man. Where is this Hall of Fame that Hartney was inducted to? A few years ago in a aviation museum in Phoenix, there was a picture and a write up of a Canadian who had gone down there during WW2 and trained a bunch of pilots. I think the name was Atkinson or ...

Re: 1952 Air Force Day

Thanks Moose47. I got my information from the Starphoenix, an article on Margaret Vavra, who drew the cartoon "Sassy", which was named to one of the aircraft. The article mentions one aircraft called "Fort a la Corne", one "Chief Thunderchild", one the "The Moose", one "Saskatoon Sassy", and one cal...

1952 Air Force Day

In 1952 Air Force Day at Saskatoon, #406 Auxiliary Squadron christened 7 Mitchell bombers. One was called "Hartney's Fighting Spirit", a tribute to Saskatoon pilot Harold Hartney who was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Distinquished Service Cross. Any idea how to go about finding out what happen...

Re: Observation Deck at YVR - Your Input Requested

xsbank, believe you could take out YUL and YFB as in the early 70's the DC6's would pass by Churchill enroute to Stond, and onward to Great Britain. Use to enjoy talking at these guys, as they would switch to VHF and place bets with the RO's on the outcome of hockey and football games, asking on the...

1963, YBR, OIC, (officer-in-charge) says, "we are not getting enough PIREPS, ask every pilot for one". Day is summer clear, asked pilot for pirep, "one small white puffy cloud north west", so I sent that out, hey, that what the idiot wanted!! Of course I could have worded it as SWPF, or Small White ...

One important thing is have up to date tide tables. During my tenure in YQ, there were more than a few who lost their lives on this coast, some of who were never seen again. Nope, it belonged to a good friend (now deceased) few years back out of YZF. Have painting of it in his memory hanging on my wall. Good question, I assume the telegraph code or the railway one came first and then Morse, and of course both use abbreviations, e.g. Q codes in aviation/marine. There would little likley hood of mix-up as one used landline and the other air. Another note, Dept of Transport Radio Operators up until ab...

Little history, once upon a time, long ago, radio com was CW (Morse Code, both Ship-Shore and Air-ground), so letters were used. "C" of course denoted Canadian radio. There was air and marine, Aeradio indents were the CY--, why the Y, I don't know why. These were located at airports. The Marine Radi...
