Re: Best Aircraft Type for Bird Dogging?
I flew a P-68 "Observer" as a detection pilot many moons ago and it was a good machine. Great vis, would hold 8hrs gas with one passenger. Too slow if you were going to dog a 415.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a turbine version? Might be worth looking into if there was...

Re: Graduate from a college flight program...now what?
I second what Rowdy and MorePower! said. I think it would definitely be worth having some sort of trade in your back pocket to back up your flying career...I'm a college grad, originally from the "T-dot" and went as far north as my first job would take me because float flying was what I wanted. Now ...

To the crew on the ground and everyone involved in the search: Keep your heads and stay positive. I'm personally picturing the -6 crew inviting their "rescuers" in for a hot cup of tea when they get there...get home safe gentlemen.

Re: Idiots of the year......................
I guess in Russia answer "B" must be right on their annual airframe icing exam: Contamination will (or might) blow off during the takeoff roll. Two things immediately come to mind when I watched that video: 1. That more than likely wasn't some random event...it probably happens more than I care to t...

Re: Tim Hortons opens first fly-in-only shop northern Manito
Tim Hortons coffee cups and donut boxes rolling around on the street will be a nice complement to the broken down snowmobiles and stray dogs...although a nice warm Timmies on court day is a step up from when I was there.

Re: Driving from southern ontario to northern manitoba
This brings back memories to when I started that trek 13 or so years ago...did it for about four years. Not driving at night is kind of difficult as the days are getting much shorter this time of year, especially in MB. About the only thing I can think of that wasn't mentioned is a 2.5 or a 5 gal ca...

Re: Mazza FIRED. Orgne in receivership
I watched some of that testimony last night and I don't think Matthews actually answered any of Klees' questions...she just danced around and did some finger pointing back at him. Funny how a "Confidential - Minister" letter can be seen by everyone in her department but her??? And according to her t...

Re: Piston Otters
I agree 100% with what Kirsten said. One of the best pieces of advice I got when I started flying the swine was "there will be times when you realize that you just can't move any faster." Meaning the wind's blowing (obviously from the wrong direction), the shoreline you're using sucks (but it's your...

Re: Ah, Airmanship, Where Has It Gone?
This is something that's been bugging me for a while and I'm glad to know that it isn't just me being overly critical of other people...I am getting older after all... Example...an aircraft lands straight in to a 3000ft gravel strip with a 5-10kt tailwind (no overflying the aerodrome or anything lik...

Re: Ornge-The truth is emerging (finally)
Unbelievable...actually no...not surprising. The "brass" as they call it should be turned loose into a crowd of taxpayers who are having trouble making ends meet with Mazza at the front of the line. See what happens  What the heck, throw Smitherman and McGuinty in there too. I think we can all...

Re: Arctic Air CBC tv show
I stand by my opinion that no one can watch a TV show that portrays their career of choice and think it was good...doesn't matter if you are a pilot, doctor, beachcomber or professional dance judge (if the last one even exists). Arctic Air only re-enforces this. Although I'll probably watch it again...

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (5 dead)
I understand the situation, done a little flying up north myself but if a pilot doesn't have the "judgement" required for the job ( I'm not judging this particular situation as I don't know the facts) then he probably should not be flying there. Big difference for a lower time pilot working in a ve...

Re: Best flying jobs (life style)
If you're not sure where to take your career, try as many different things as you can. I'm guessing you have been flying for maybe three years or so (if you're a full time pilot that is). One thing I've learned (the hard way) is don't spend all your time thinking or wishing you were working somewher...

I second that. And Timmins even has a Shania museum!Actually no, the point is there are a hell of a lot worse places to make 80 per year with 2000hours than Timmins.

Re: Must be getting near the end of the season
I was warming up the old otter one afternoon on the Manitoba/Nunavut border when the guy next to me started in with all the questions that have already been mentioned and finished up with this: Overweight passenger covered in Cabela's camo: So do you live up here? Me, the increasingly agitated pilot...

I thought I was the only one that was noticing this...so does that mean that the younger generations are actually getting worse, or we are in fact getting older?

90% of pilots say that. But when the phone call comes to fly the "big iron" making half as much on a shittier schedule you can barely catch up to them to say good luck.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with ettw on that one because I've seen it first hand.

Old guys bringing generators to power their breathing machines for when they were asleep (kinda spooky). Satellite dishes and DVD players ...

Re: Wages for 180 pilot
I think the only one doing the "putting down" is you BF. Saying that someone isn't worth shit because they'd rather spend a summer getting some experience with a bush operator (and maybe even some flying) for wages that are below your standards doesn't sound all that constructive to me. How about so...

Re: Algonquin Turbo Beav Job
3000 hrs T.T. and 1000 hrs pic on floats. The Park is a good gig and during the summer months OEH is the hardest working airplane at the MNR. You get a cabin on the lake, expenses and a dockhand. 300-350 hrs for the season and it's mostly .2's and .3's (with canoe) and a little telemety and fire fly...
