Re: Tankering Fuel

Most planes landing in the north from the south land at max landing weight, carrying as much fuel as possible. The price delta makes it a no brainer.

The “I have nothing to hide” group has done more harm to society than the actual criminals and wrongdoers. And it’s only getting worse.

Re: Toronto Sightseeing

Do you have the Toronto VTA? If not, get it and study it, and know the airspace. Do not enter class C airspace (vertically or horizontally) without a clearance. You may get clearance through Pearson’s zone if it’s not busy, but if you’re not particularly comfortable on the radio I wouldn’t recommend...

Re: Buttonville Tower Closed!

I love how the VTPC in the new CFS is blatantly incorrect. It shows the YKZ control zone as being class E up to 3500 ft. I have a feeling someone will read that and then get a real good view of a 777.

It has been corrected by NOTAM, but this should not have made it to the printing press.

Slid off before take-off, so presumably this happened at something close to taxi speed? RWY 15/33 is still NOTAM'd closed due to disabled aircraft.

Re: VFR Tower Initial Contact with FF

In either case, I would make the same initial call. If you picked up flight following, you will be tagged up on the tower's radar but the center does not normally point out VFRs when they switch them to tower. If it's a good VFR day there could be many targets out there and the tower controller may ...

Re: Regional Airline Pilot to IFR Controller, worth the switch?

If your primary motivation isn't a burning desire to do the job, in my opinion you have a low chance of success. Nav Canada is not a shortcut to a big payday and cushy lifestyle. Financially, you are taking a risk if you accept a training offer because a lot of people don't make it through and the t...

Re: St. Catherines Flying Club - lawsuit re October 16, 2016 fatal crash

I'm not a member of any flying club, but I don't see how it's a good thing for GA in Canada if any of them get sued out of existence. I find it hard to believe that this one is beyond the pale with regards to recklessness and negligence, while the rest are all perfect and something like this could n...

I don't trust anybody who has a problem with the background check. Its scary enough these kids are put in airplanes with pilots of unknown skill, let alone possible Pedo pilots.
Implying anyone who disagrees with you just might be a pedophile is a pretty weak argument.

Re: Skylease Cargo 747 Runway Overrun YHZ Nov 7, 2018

Even with the “better” 1200 ft ceiling after the accident, a visual approach was completely out of the question as ATC minimums for a visual are much higher than 1200 ft (these minimums are not published). A contact approach would have been a legal option, but I will not comment as to the wisdom of ...

600 is the forecast ceiling, 2 is the forecast visibility. So if there is 1 usable precision approach, you must have a TAF showing at least 600ft and 2 miles to use the airport as an alternate.

Re: Passenger rights advocate launches complaint against new low-cost airline

That's objectively not true. They have options to pay for both checked and carry-on bags, which aren't included in the base fare. Baggage fees are found in a section called "Add Ons", which sounds familiar: "Karen McIsaac, a spokeswoman for the Calgary-based airline, says Swoop provides travellers ...

Re: Who has the right of way when taxiing

If it's a controlled surface, ATC dictates who has right of way. If you're a dead tie with someone else and you haven't been instructed to hold short/give way or been told the other aircraft is giving way to you, it's a good idea to proceed with caution and/or clarify with ATC.

Re: Landing Long (on purpose)!

Do you have a reference for that A346dude? Unfortunately I do not, all I have is my experience watching it happen. A long landing may save you 1 minute of taxiing, but if it occurs at the wrong time and costs 3 planes waiting for departure 1 minute each, it's a net loss for the airport. As others h...

Re: Landing Long (on purpose)!

I figure ATC will let me know if they need me to exit at a particular place or time. Not a good assumption. You should be trying to get off the runway ASAP, i.e. at the first available exit, unless otherwise approved. ATC doesn't and shouldn't have to tell everyone to exit the first available with ...

Re: Landing Long (on purpose)!

Why would you even have to ask for a long landing? Unless you get cleared to land with a hold short instruction of RWY 13/31, you can land at the numbers of 36 if you manage to not go off the end of the runway. I don't know how things run normally at YWG, but at many airports the difference between...

Re: PPL flight test Navigation : "talking" with ATS

If you take off from a controlled field or FSS, you just tell them on first call that you're on a VFR flight plan to XYZ, and they'll let you know if it's not in the system. Do not expect a Tower to know anything about your flight plan or lack thereof. In most cases towers do not have access to VFR...

Interesting how we now have two close calls (this and SFO) where the airlines involved initially brushed off significant incidents as non-events. I will have trouble taking their word for it in the future.

Re: Does the TC dispatch license expire? And experience abroad.

There is no Dispatcher license per se in Canada. The requirements to act as a Dispatcher are to pass the written exams (FD-OPS and FD-MET) and complete an on-the-job training program when you are hired at an airline. Your Dispatch Certificate expires when you leave that airline, and you need to comp...

If you 100% cannot start training in the next 2 years, I would wait at least another year before applying. If you get an offer in a year and have to turn it down there's a pretty good chance you will not get another, and that would be a pretty tough situation to face. If you think there's a chance y...

The ones in the circuit had right of way, if that's what you were asking. The aircraft taxiing out could have asked if the circuit traffic would like to change direction to match the wind, but if they decline for any reason the traffic on the ground should be taxiing to take off in line with traffi...

I call bullshit on you. (Sorry.) OK, so you are arguing for more rules then. Because the system only works as well as it usually does because most pilots are willing to accept some grey and go beyond the rules to keep things running smoothly. If everyone did their VFR holds and approaches NORDO just outside the zone you would very ...

But these are not restrictions caused by VFR traffic not monitoring the tower, or not stating intentions. These are restrictions caused by VFR traffic being there in the first place. Even if I monitor the frequency or state my intentions you still can't depart that traffic. If you're monitoring the...
