Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

For me I felt it was the nice thing to do to get my OJI a bottle of a drink they like as a token of my gratitude for their help and coaching. They said it was totally not necessary, but appreciated the sentiment. However, there were a few other controllers at the unit that demanded a check out party...

Re: ATC Survey, Please Help

Good point MAC. What really needed is a program where pilots come in to visit various ATC units and see what happens in the tower cab and on the radar screen, and controllers need flights in the cockpit where they can see the pilots' workload and get a better understanding of what the plane can and ...

Re: Is Buttonville a viable option for renting

Although Buttonville is slated to close in the realitively near future, Toronto Airways are planned to move over to Oshawa. If that's not too far of a drive for you it might be worth checking out.

Re: SID, STARS and waypoint names

"Should" notice the left turn, yes. But there were some instances where the auto-pilot started the turn in the wrong direction when they were given a short-cut to some waypoint further down the flight plan route before the pilots intervened.. Start with a blank sheet and still come up with these: VE...

Re: SID, STARS and waypoint names

There is a database of all 5-letter waypoints in use around the world, along with unused ones that can be selected when a new one is required. They used to be selected in conjunction with a local geographic feature or person, but now that trend is subsiding in favour of a semi-random name generated ...

Re: PA 27????

And....I say again, there IS no such thing as a PA27! Ah, but there is! ICAO says that the abbreviation for a flight progress strip for a Piper Aztec is a PA27. Get over it. You're aware of this nomenclature, and so should be capable of realizing what you're looking for when a controller passes tra...

Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

I agree. The sentiment is the important thing. Find out his favourite tipple or restaurant. A decent bottle of scotch or some nice wine are good examples. If they don't drink, a gift card to somewhere like The Keg is oft appreciated.

Re: Upcoming VFR courses in YYZ region?

There's a VFR course starting early September in YYZ. As for the next course, I don't know the start date, but would presume somewhere around Feb/Mar based on the length of a typical course.

for sure, i completely understand that....have you been posted up there? any insight? pointers? No, I'm in the YYZ FIR, but I do know a number of folk who currently do, and have worked at Whitehorse and they loved it. Sure, it's a different lifestyle to being in Edmonton say, but all of them say it...

He has stated he is orepared and understands that he could go anywhere, he is asking for someone who works/has worked there or knows someone who has to tell him about it is up there at those locations. Not asking where he is going. Are you sure...? After you completed your VFR specific training and...

Re: Squawk Ident

Photo- Do you respond to a "Standby" as well then? ;) I've heard both ways on this, just looking for further clarification from ATC as to which is best, however multiple intrawebs searches come up with responses from controllers that state not to respond. Thanks, RexKrammer. You're an IFR controlle...

Re: Squawk Ident

If you don't acknowledge the instruction to squawk ident, then there's no real way to confirm that the ident seen flashing on the screen is actually yours. You therefore should at a minimum include your ident with the acknowledgement to ident.

Re: ITA clarification and support

Did they send you a copy of the "From The Ground Up" book as well as your ITA study material? That helps explain some concepts too. Like said above, you will have time to discuss any things you need clarifying with the instructors at the start of your course. Make a note of any questions you have an...

Ditto to the above comment. But Nav Canada is your better option unless you have dual citizenry and are eligible to work in America. The FAA is desperate for staff.

Re: Seniority Bid Question

Like Tower Controller said, it has happened, but it really has to be in the company's interest. And it's more likely that if it happens, it's because the company has asked the controller to move within the 3 year period rather than the controller making the request and being approved.

Re: Take Charge site glitch - candidate photo

Pearson is in need of extra staff, but so are other towers. There is limited room on each course due to space in the classroom and simulator. It would be fruitless trying to cram as many candidates onto a course as there were successful applicants because there just wouldn't be room to teach them al...

Re: ITA Questions, and hopefully a little positivity.

Like most of the theory in the course it will come down to how much time you have to put in to be successful. The passing mark is 80% but you will learn right away that you don't want to be at 80%, you want to be aiming for 90s though I would say just worry about getting through the ITA as it's rel...

I was late 30s when I started and I checked out. It can be done. So long as you have the right frame of mind and aptitude, age is not a factor.

All of the above, including the pay and time off. Particularly during the week. Working shifts you can do so much when places are quiet.
Plus, you get to smell kerosene every day too!
