406 in conjunction with Spot

Hi all. I continue to read these tragic aircraft accidents in the most beautiful and rugged terrain, the BC mountains. Planes go missing for various reasons, mechanical failure or otherwise. The reasons are really not important in order to find someone in a downed aircraft. The 406 ELT is supposed t...

Re: Legal Marijuana

very strange/coincidental, i was just in having my medical the other day and me and the ME were chatting about this. The "zero tolerance" for cannabis is being discussed for all pilots, apparently. There are no "ramp checks", per se, but as was mentioned above and positive on a test could spell trou...

Re: Night Rating - You Should Think About It!

Im in the terminal stages of my PPL and there are two things I'm going to do right after i get my license are: 1) Night Rating (it gets dark really early in the pacific area) and 2) FAA license so I can rent a plane when I travel. I'm looking forward to the night rating.

Left my PPL training in Ontario for PPL training in BC. There is no "mountain license" or anything like that. Just lots of learning and observing. Be Safe.

Re: a problem with compass swing

Just went through this exact problem. Take this for what it's worth, and people make mistakes. Had a compass swing, got it back from shop, and everything seemed okay, for a bit, then, everything went off about 20 degrees. We thought it was the magnets in the electronics (which it still may have been...

Re: Why on earth are CF-18's in Bagotville?

Such a remote location, then again, so is Cold Lake. Could it be in order to keep the noise away from the people further south? I found a litlle bit of history in a magazine article I read recently... "After the Second World War and the disbanding of the BCATP, Mont-Joli No. 9 Bombing and Gunnery S...

Re: PilotExams.ca PPL Practice Questions Software

i used a combination of Harv's Air, pilotexams.ca, dauntless and hangaar on my phone whenever i was just hanging out doing questions.
you do have to sit down and do the navigation stuff/map stuff with some focus, though. You should do fine with those.

My ground school was Harv's Air.

As an FYI, best buy was (is?) blowing out the 9.7 inch ipad pro from last year. Saving from original is like $300 off.

Paper maps vs EFB/GPS for VFR

Just curious how many of you are still using paper VNC/VTA or a GPS and/or IPAD for VFR flights.
Advantages for both, but just curious.

ipad mini/ipad pro 12.9 inch and bad elf together (updated)

Hi, I have an original ipad mini and bad elf that i would like to sell together. Good twosome for your foreflight/pilot/other favourite navigation app. the bad elf is almost brand new. the ipad mini (16gb wifi) is a few years old, but barely used. Also have an ipad pro 12.9" wifi, that is on apple c...

Re: Aircraft Rentals in the Lower Mainland

If you are looking to impress, you can't go wrong with renting out of Squamish at Glacier Air. Or just book a tour with Sea to Sky Air and ask if they will let you fly left seat since you are licensed. Ask for a "you fly". Flying up at squamish and the area is not like flying in the lower mainland.

TBO 2000?

Hi there, I'm looking at getting a plane, and one i came across looks pretty good. There is 1800 hours on the 2000 TBO (cessna 172) I've been told that the oil consumption is very low and there is no metal to be seen or found. What is truly a typical TBO for a 172 engine, if it has been maintained p...

Re: Accident in North Vancouver

I think he used a dipstick for a 172 with Long Range tanks (52 gal) vs. one for Short Range (42 gal). If he used a LR dipstick in a SR tank and saw 42 gal (total) at YNJ, that would be consistent with his statement that he had 5h15min of fuel when he left YNJ (assuming 8 gal/hr burn rate). It does ...
