Re: No Sea King successors until 2010

Is this what someone on here was talking about, the CF adding requirements? More powerful engines since more hardware is being placed aboard? and it continues........... Essentially. In short, what is happening is three fold; the manufacturer is experiencing delays in testing and design, secondly, ...

Re: Russian MIG shoots down Georgian UAV

Solid propellant will fracture with age, leading to unstable/uneven combustion, and ultimately, explosions rather than controlled burn. They very definitely have a shelf life. Further IR guided weapons suffer from coolant aging, and become less effective over time, also a shelf life constraint. Fin...

Re: Russian MIG shoots down Georgian UAV

Gotta get a lot closer for guns than missles, and maybe he wanted to keep his distance, so they couldn't see his markings? Sure enough, they can't say who's MiG-29 shot it down. Watching the video, I kept hoping that the UAV would at least try to turn into the MiG or missle. With his much slower st...

Re: NDP wants Cdn C-17 pilots inexperienced

1. It is very common for the members of NATO to send conduct military exchange with other members of the alliance. We have had Brits, Dutch, German, Norwegian and American personnel all come to Canada as part of a exchange program. It helps keep everyone familiar about each others practises, capabi...

Re: NDP wants Cdn C-17 pilots inexperienced

CID, As this has been going on since before the Harper gov't came to power, will you still direct your scorn at the Liberal Party who were in power at the time? Were Chretien and Martin lackies or bitches to the US too, or do you only smear those who you don't agree with politically? Before Harper ...

Re: NDP wants Cdn C-17 pilots inexperienced

It took this long for the media to catch wind of this? Is this yet another slow news day?

We have been sending pilots down to the US for training for a LONG time. And it was well known in the airlift community that we were doing so and they had no qualms about it.

Re: US Airways "Gun Mishap" Pilot To Be Fired

Why was there a round in the chamber? Presumably so that he doesn't have to chamber one before defending himself. I can see the reasoning behind having a hot weapon, but with cockpit doors being locked all the time what is the drawback to taking an extra 0.25 seconds to rack the slide/cock t...

Like I have said before, give the DND at least $10 billion dollars more in stable funding annually, and we might be talking.

Re: Search planes to be replaced in 2014

I may also add that Defence in general is well over $1 billion dollars behind in infrastructure repairs because we have been shortchanged for so long. Due to the lack of funding, we often keep differing maintenance which piles up, until it gets to the point where there is no point of repairing what'...

Re: Automakers ask Ottawa to consider raising gas prices

If you can afford to drive a sixty thousand dollar vehicle of the dealer lot .Where you will lose at least twenty percent of that vehicles worth just by driving it off the lot in one day .You should be able to afford the gas for the first year without crying about it . If they doubled the price of ...

Re: Automakers ask Ottawa to consider raising gas prices

Wow what an article! Did I really just read that garbage?! [the government] would take the unpopular step of hiking gas taxes, which now represent about 40% to 50% of what drivers pay at the pump. Unpopular?! That there is the very definition of political suicide! Personnally I can't think of a bet...

Re: Canada seeking up to six reconditioned U.S. helicopters

Yes. When the government of the day decided to cash in the "peace dividend" when the Soviet Union imploded, that meant further gutting of the CF. It was thought that we could go from three helicopter types to one, without losing much in capability. We had: 1/ The CH136 Kiowa (Bell 206) wh...

Re: Search planes to be replaced in 2014

The Buffs are getting increasingly difficult to service; many of the parts manufacturers have either gone out of business or stopped making the parts long ago. As such, aircraft availability is down; only a fraction of the Buffalo fleet is available for duties, if I remember correctly due to want of...

Re: Hydrogen Powered Airplane

The Ruskies had a hydrogen powered aircraft in the Tu-155, but the issue is hydrogen storage. The hydrogen will have to be in cryogenic storage or in a pressurized tank, and that's a significant weight problem.

Re: Adventurers = drain on taxpayer $$$ and for what?

Pocket change compared to this. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/03/25/costly-shells.html The latest breed of precision guided munitions are a fairly expensive lot. For example, the Paveway II 500lb laser guided bomb, a staple of the US and NATO air forces since the 1970's cost around $19,000 bu...

Re: Ottawa halts $1.6B upgrade of maritime patrol aircraft

To WJflyer, I understand the desire to piggy-back on a larger country's system but you have to understand the issues that P-8 is trying to get through. The P-8 is years late right now. It also can't operate for any significant time below 5000' ASL due to the engines overheating. The Americans are t...

Re: 2006 Cormorant accident report released

The issue is that we don't have a simulator here in Canada; for our pilots to be qualified on the Cormorant, they go to the UK to use the British simulator there. I bet that if we had a simulator here in Canada, our crews would have more time to practise flying, even if it is in a simulator.
