Re: Easy on the throttle!

Why would the back cylinders have to catch up? Aren't most engines designed to have a somewhat equal length of ducting for air and fuel to get to the cylinders? Yes, though I could thread drift that topic too! Catch up in the torque sense, all the power goes out the front of the engine. The pilot j...

Easy on the throttle!

From time to time, I hear flight training overhead... From time to time, I hear an airplane throttled well back, fair enough, it's flight training. From time to time, a rather quiet airplane emits a sound very much like the pilot just jammed the throttle hard forward. Steady on pilots! Go eas...

Re: Owner Maintenance flying to the USA

I've found that the OM category puts me and my mechanic in a better position to maintain my 1947 Cessna 140. I get an AME to do most engine work and anything control related. However, I usually do all the leg work in researching the repairs and sourcing the parts. The Cessna120/140 association has ...

Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

On Friday (April 14th) I plan to stop by a few Vancouver area airports with Sealand's diesel Beaver, so those interested can have a look. A popular social media page with a DHC Beaver group will be updated by Sealand staff as the where and when I'll stop, as I progress, if anyone is interested...

Re: Owner Maintenance flying to the USA

I have had a number of discussions with FAA staff about flying my OM airplane into the US. the answer has never been a hard "no", but a "no" at so high a bar, it was not worth the trouble. I know that there has been authorization for an OM airplane to fly in the US< I have seen it. but it was not an...

Re: External loads

The Beaver and Otter have some external loads specified on their TCDS. As long as you fly the load as approved on the TDCS, that's approved. Otherwise, you should have an STC for the load you propose to carry. Other airplane types will require an STC for the load, if it's not approved by teh TCDS. T...

Re: Toronto Area flight school

Learning at a controlled airport certainly has the benefit of the student learning the important skills of ATC and radio work as a part of learning to fly. A necessary skill which must be learned, so no reason to not do it early. For myself, it was a skill learned later, as I learned to fly first wi...

You may also suggest to your niece that there are choices north of Toronto, Lake Simcoe Regional, and Orillia. Much less busy airports/airspace, and at Orillia, she can do a bit of float flying too...

Re: Another example of the bad info pilots can be given

We were doing a test flight in Germany many years ago, towing the survey bird under the DC3T..... https://www.lakecentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/ID26-EM-BIRD-2.jpg We'd told Helogoland ATC what we were doing. A few minutes later, we had a stressed call from ATC, saying that it had been repor...

It's not like they have extra tails laying around to pick up the slack anymore.
I saw three of them sitting at Lake Simcoe Regional Airport today, but I'm guessing that the keys are not in them!

Hmmm... I think that Hope Aero in Toronto could repair it, and certify the work. Certainly, the repair I did was an easy do, though O/M so not certified.

Re: C-180 on floats 2 blade vs 3 blade prop

Yes, all three blades on my MT separated at the trailing edge for about 1.5". The manual explains how the repair is done with five minute epoxy and fiberglass cloth. I repaired the delamination as the MT manual said a few year back, and have not had any problem since. There are plusses and minuses t...

Re: C-180 on floats 2 blade vs 3 blade prop

And..... simply making a bigger footprint in the air. Think bigger prop is like bigger snowshoes, lower [snow] pressure. For the same airplane power and drag, a lower propeller disc loading with a larger diameter prop. But, as noted, noise becomes a problem, and that's a hot button topic with TC the...

Re: C-180 on floats 2 blade vs 3 blade prop

I installed an MTV9 three blade reversing on my client's 550 powered 182 amphibian, we were very happy with the results. I did the formal Transport Canada/EASA noise test, as the plane was exported to it's owner in Norway. With the prop RPM at 2500, and at 3350 gross weight, the noise was 88.5 dBA. ...

Yes, Sealand has a set of amphibs for it, and we'll do more flight testing in that configuration this spring.

Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

Yes, the intake is large, there are two radiators (lower), and two intercoolers (upper). There are two high pressure fuel pumps. everything other than crankshhaft and reduction gearbox are left and right duplicates. You can (and I did) switch off half the engine, and the other half continues to run ...

Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

Yes, everything other than the crankshaft, gearbox, propeller and fuel to the firewall is dual system, independent of the other system. Airframe complete dual electrical systems. This nearly a twin engined Beaver!

Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

Yes, Rig, there is! I tested it today! I turned off one "half" of the engine, and continued on the other "half" no problem. I have posted the video to FB, as I don't really know how to post it here... 43% power is available with half the engine turned off. Cruising flight at 32% power is no problem....

Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

I climb tested the Sealanad/RED diesel Beaver today with Bill as my observer. We took off at 6000 pounds gross weight, passed 10,000 feet in less than 10 minutes, and were still climbing at 600 FPM as I reached 16,000. External factors today prevented going higher, but the plane certainly would have...
