Re: The Sealand RED V12 Diesel Beaver flies!

For those near Toronto who might like to see the diesel Beaver before it heads back out west, I plan to stop into Burlington mid day Friday with it. Precise time to be determined....

I was checking out an actual 2-time Space Shuttle astronaut.
Very cool! I bet his forced approaches were good!

Re: Biennial flight review requirement coming to Canada from 2024

I've read the posts, and given them thought, so I'm thinking a step back: What is the purpose of the BFR? A check of competency? Or, Instruction? I believe that the purpose is a check. Thus, the term "instructor" for the role of the check pilot is parallel, and not required. Sure, if it works that a...

So my vote for para h would be h) recurrent training is a flight review as per CAR 405.11 (c) and shall be conducted in accordance with CAR 405.14 Instructor Guide for 24 month recurrent training 'Sounds good, if the "in accordance with..." does not actually require the check pilot to be an instruc...

.......shall include all items normally covered during the flight test for the issue of that permit or licence;” That means the instructor MUST review everything,....... It's going to have to be a [trained] judgement thing. If the check pilot has concerns about the candidate's skills, dig deeper. I...

Re: Looking for a Freelance Class 3 or higher instructor in Niagara

Yes, Photofly's advice may be your better path. If your inquiry results in a good outcome, that's great for you. But your outcome will be better if you and the airplane are where the action is. With your experience, you should not need many trips to the airport where its going on to complete your tr...

Re: Biennial flight review requirement coming to Canada from 2024

I support the spirit of what I understand from this. In my opinion, receiving "training" or exposure to piloting, is not a substitute for actually demonstrating the skills. I think that a proud pilot should not have any hesitancy to demonstrate their proficiency to another pilot. That said, I also a...

Re: Night VFR changes - latest proposals as of May 2023

For example, the impetus to use the flight instruments on a clear night over a dark lake comes not from the meteorological conditions, which are fine, but the overall flight conditions - dark surface and no horizon visible. that came to mind as I read... VMC might not be VFC with zero surface refer...

Re: One dead, one injured in helicopter.maintenance accident

A sadly vivid reminder that when you apply power to an aircraft, you must consider where the aircraft could go if the power application results in unintended motion. I did today, and it started to go there - no problem, I had planned - but there was unintended motion, until I aborted and stopped it.

Re: Moving around the country and out of province vehicles?

For one more reason, it's probably worth re-registering the car in the new province. My charming middle daughter did not right away when she moved to another province. She called me very upset that someone had smashed her back window while it was parked behind her apartment. 'Nothing stolen, just br...

Re: 182 crash at Langley

Isn't there a response standard for that category airport, as shown in the CFS? Be careful what you ask for... A local airport did that, and you were covered for crash/fire/rescue in your Cessna for every landing - and every landing had a $10 fee on top of the airport landing fee for the service be...

Re: Nasty Airport - Sedona, AZ.

The Sedona crash looks to me like a bungled attempt yo go around, following a poor landing. I opine that the Langley accident was more a case of a forced approach, with "I think I can.... Oh damn, a truck...". Both sad events, and different.

Re: Owner Maintenance flying to the USA

AMEs don’t have the authority to ground a plane Correct. It is the pilot's decision to fly a plane or not, based upon it's being in conformance with the airworthiness requirements applicable to its flight authority. Example: Years ago, I bought a 172, with the full intention to do a major rebuild o...

Re: Easy on the throttle!

the sudden influx of air will shut the engine right down if you push the throttle lever in too quickly. Yes, that's another good way to teach easy on the throttle! I had my lesson with that in a Cub on skis on the lake.... The windmilling prop should restart the engine right away. No... I had to ge...

Re: Easy on the throttle!

Fast implies harsh and immediate with little to no thought, while prompt is quickly but smoothly and governed by knowledge and understanding of the situation. Yes, hopefully, your mind is ahead of the airplane, and you know what it's going to need next, so you can anticipate and ease it in, rather ...

Re: Easy on the throttle!

Why would the back cylinders have to catch up? Aren't most engines designed to have a somewhat equal length of ducting for air and fuel to get to the cylinders? Yes, though I could thread drift that topic too! Catch up in the torque sense, all the power goes out the front of the engine. The pilot j...
