Not common at all. Make sure you get $2500 worth of instruction before leaving for a school that is more focussed on teaching you to fly than on raping your wallet.

Re: Actually wearing a lifejacket for overwater flying
I recall seeing a website that showed how to disable the Auto (water-activated) feature on the common (cheap) Mustang lifejacket. I'll see if I can find it again.

Re: 5% per year
When people looked closely, they found that people with ABS started using it routinely, and drove deeper into the corners. This is not a good example at all. The ABS doesn‘t reduce the stopping distance over the threshold braking technique, regardless what's in a car brochure with glossy pictures ....

Re: Buying my First logbook, A few questions.
A software logbook? Don't invest anything but your time filling it out. A spreadsheet is much more useful, and can be programmed to calculate your currency numbers as well. If you don't have Excel, surf on over to OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice.org and download their Microsoft-compatible office suite...

Re: Association of professional aircraft pilots of Canada
Not that it's in the realm of reasonable or even practical possibility but what about a self regulated Professional Organization that is responsible for not only advocacy but ethics, codes of conduct and licensing/membership. This came up when the College held an info session here in Abbotsford. Th...

Re: Do noise cancelling headsets protect or damage your ears
@Driving Rain, that the sound waves are cancelled is clear, as we don't hear the noise once we turn on the ANR. What wasn't clear is where the energy goes. Following on the visualization, here's another analogy: The outlets in your wall put out 120V AC, or alternating current. If you took two 120V A...

Re: Do noise cancelling headsets protect or damage your ears
The headset just has to do work in order to cancel out the noise (similar to a fridge removing heat), so all the cockpit noise that would have entered your ear is instead converted into heat in the headset, plus extra heat from inefficiencies. That's the best explanation I came up with the only tim...

Re: Do noise cancelling headsets protect or damage your ears
Despite studying acoustics in university (not extensively, just one 4th-year course), it happened before ANR headsets became common. What i've never taken the time to reconcile in my mind is the physics involved... You're introducing noise into your earcups by running your engine, that noise carries...

So if you have your iPad there so you can look at your charts, do you have to worry about your co-pilot ratting you out if you happen to switch apps to angry birds when you're drinking your coffee?

I don't know the chapter and verse, but i'm pretty sure there is something in there about a Commercial (or maybe it's ATPL) pilot being able to give dual on his own aircraft for the purpose of a checkout.
