Re: What are stupid things that pilots do that bug you?

I have a question for ground controllers... Last night after requesting and denied landing on 05...it was busy, it happens and no biggie, we landed on 06R at YYZ and were taxiing to the North end. We were taxied all the way down A to H (expected). What was interesting was a right turn on H and hold...

Re: What are stupid things that pilots do that bug you?

In the States and many other countries if you wait to be "handed off" on the ground you will wait until you are out of fuel. They expect the PILOT to know what the next frequency is. Canada is not the states and that is not how we work. The frequency change signs were an almost complete failure: as...

Re: What are stupid things that pilots do that bug you?

YYZ Tower perspective: Changing frequencies before being told to do so on both ground and tower; would you change enroute? Reminding ground that you're holding short; Insisting your gate is open - until apron takes the gate hold off, you have to wait; Not paying attention, especially when ground is ...

Re: Moving airplanes better and faster in YYZ?

Sitting in line gives you way too much time to think up better ways of doing things. Departing 23 when the 33s are in use? Let me think.... OK you'd be departing from H because B would have traffic on it that had landed on 33L or perhaps 33R; You'd have to roll through the gap between departur...

Re: Moving airplanes better and faster in YYZ?

Thanks. Its good to hear something good once in a while. :) During the afternoon/evening I think we've used 33R from B1 for the north bound Dashes less than we have in the past because 05/23 has been busier and North Ground is sometimes too busy with taxying traffic and/or gate holds to make it work...

Re: Moving airplanes better and faster in YYZ?

You're a brave man coming in here and complementing YYZ like that. YYZ is getting steadily busier and over the past month or so, 06R/24L has been closed so we've been mixed mode on the other two from 06:30-22:00 which, when there are 100+ flights in an hour, is a lot of work for not just the ...

Re: RNAV wyapoint names and FRCs

A lot of carriers do use PDC but when a flight plan is not filed with the pref route or the route is changed due to weather or flow, then the PDC is no longer valid and clearance has to read up to the end of the changes and finishes with the first common fix then "flight planned route". When a plan ...

Re: YYZ ILS glide slope unserviceable

Visual departure separation is not a locally approved procedure at YYZ.....yet <Sound of heels dragging> Busiest airport in the country being handcuffed by delays in approving what the rest of the world already does. :? Maybe we should rescind visual approaches too. There are numerous times ...

Re: YVR delays right now

loopa wrote:Not sure if YVR follows the same MANOPS as YYZ, but in YYZ if the x-wind component exceeds (15kts wet/25kts dry), they use the into wind runway. So in the case of YYZ it's the 23/24 or 06/05 combo until the above requirement makes 15 or 33 the active.
If only it were that black and white.

Re: Commuter towns west of YYZ

I'm rural Caledon (35 minutes 10 of it on the 410) and there are a few controllers in Orangeville (45 minutes). I'm sure there are some pilot types up here too.

Re: CADORS at YYZ

Hi Cossack, not sure which airline requires a takeoff clearance prior to an engine run, it may be because one of their crews had the power up and without thinking about it commenced a take off roll.. I could very easily see how this could happen on a dark night or early morning. That is a possibili...

Re: CADORS at YYZ

30 second engine cleaning and an efficient mixed mode operation don't go together. Some crews, if asked, are willing to do the engine cleaning prior to lining up and those that do it on the runway will do so while the arrival is rolling out in front and cause minimal issues. There are still a few wh...

Re: YYZ 24R

Keven is correct. The approach clearance must be the same as specified in the CAP but with the GP inoperative. Same thing as a localizer approach but more wordy.

Re: CYYZ Ground ops question

Sunday to Friday there's normally 5 working positions: 2 Tower, 2 Ground and Clearance and a supervisor. When 24L/R are in use simultaneously there will be a monitor controller acting as an extra pair of eyes and ears on 118.35. We should have 10 or 11 on shift to facilitate this operation: so 7 wor...

Re: CYYZ Ground ops question

SG and NG sit about 20 feet apart facing pretty much away from each other. SG faces the CN Tower and NG faces the threshold of 23 and there is a concrete roof support which obscures SG's view just north of AK. Yes we have labelled ASDE but it doesn't show gate numbers on inbound aircraft, just calls...

Re: CYYZ Ground ops question

You answered your own question. South Ground always looks to give you straight to apron at AK but sometimes it just can't be done efficiently. SG sees traffic coming through the ramp and down B and 15L and doesn't know for sure where any of it is going. If there's doubt or its too busy to coordinate...
