Re: FAA expands next generation of aviation technology in Alaska
Is ADS-B really necessary for general aviation aircraft? With regards to navigation, couldn't a standard GPS with a moving map display handle the same navigation stuff as ADS-B? and for A LOT cheaper too? With regards to traffic seperation, I'm curious as to how many of these accidents in Alaska co...

Re: Hold Clearance Wording
Yes, there is standard phraseology for holding clearances. If holding on a radial: "Cleared to the ABC VOR via ______, maintain ______, hold (north/south/east/west) on ___ radial, expect approach clearance _____" If holding on your inbound track: "Cleared to the ABC VOR via ______, maintain ______, ...

Re: Passing an aptitude test what happens with pools
The way it was when I interviewed (about 3 years ago now) was they asked you, in the interview, rate the following in order of preference: IFR, VFR, FSS and then if you chose IFR as #1 or #2, pick your first, second, and third prefered IFR center: Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Mo...

September 30/2004 cycle!!!!!!!!!! Can somebody give me a real good explanation on the value of these web sites? There are lots of people who use them for purposes other then flying such as flight sim programs, instructional tools, general familiarization. Many applications exist for these ch...

I knew I saw this somewhere.
Yes, it is a music video, but all the footage for the first 2 minutes or so is official video from the jump.

Re: Screening of ATC candidates
The tests are multiple choice now? :shockedbig: Absolutely not! There is one multiple choice exam near the beginning on the pre-course material, but every single Nav Canada exam you write (until the KVT right before qualification) are either long answer or fill in the blanks. There are NO multiple ...

Re: IFR training salary
No, IFR training salary doesn't change based on where you are training. And it's currently slightly more then 30k, I believe it gone up to about 32-33k.

Re: IFR clarification
In Canada, if you are cleared by ATC "cleared direct ALPHA, ALPHA1 arrival" or something similar to that, you CANNOT descend below the cleared altitude issued by ATC. For example, if the altitude you were cleared to was 7000', then you are issued the STAR, or the STAR was in your flight plan all alo...

Re: FSS and VFR course question
How does it work with the regional IFR training then? There's no on-site housing. So do people tend to stay late a few nights to study together or work the PC simulator (did a Cornwall tour a few years back and they had a PC based sim that needed 2 people to use)? I found that under the new regiona...

Re: Difference between clearance and instruction?
The basic difference between a clearance and an instruction is that an instruction must be followed unless safety will be compromised, whereas a clearance can be turned down by the pilot for other reasons. For example, if an instruction such as "fly heading 310" is issued, unless that heading will p...

How much they going to sue for? 20 mill? Hope not... If WJ charges a fee to provide a service and then doesn't provide it I can see them getting sued, hope the parents don't get big dollar signs in their eyes though... it wasn't THEM being unaccompanied. Just read in the paper today, parents are as...

If you're not familiar with it, there is class B airspace between airportsas well, not just around control towers. If a VFR aircraft is going to be flying between, say, YBW and YWG at 15,000', he is in Class B aispace from the moment he hits 12,500'. When he is given the clearance to enter Class B a...

ummm... what do all the provinces between Alaska and Chicago have to say about this? I would think that it would probably only involve 2 provinces and one territory. Yukon would be all for it.. It would barely touch northern BC and I am sure Alberta would buy into the plan as it would give them a t...

Under the new system, there is no minimum "average" you have to maintain throughout the course, since you must get 80% on EVERY exam and eval to continue training. Once you pass an exam or an eval, what grade you got on it doesn't matter at all, since you have to get 80% to pass the next one regardl...

If the aircraft is off RADAR, and will be in controlled airspace, I would not (and am not permitted) to give a direct clearance unless the aircraft is /G or /R. I have had aircraft request direct routings "via GPS" in a non-radar environment, and I have to ask if the GPS is IFR certified. In most c...

Second - the term priority, in my experience, is asked (for example) to determine if we need to land straight in 18 when 36 is the active (and re-route other traffic), as opposed to coming around for 31. Of course they are both important, but in some cases that extra five minutes might make a huge ...
