Re: YYZ De-icing live props

Here I thought they strapped a guy to a big wheel, rotated the wheel vertical and spun the wheel at the same RPM as the propeller so he (or she) could spray the propeller blades. Sort of like an ancient Huck starter. Easy work for the strapper but kinda tough on the strappee. :smt040 :smt040  :...

Re: Buses at the airport

Back in the '60's there was a problem with mostly government passengers showing up to fly in a single engine VFR only charter bush airplane to remote destinations wearing clothing appropriate for their downtown offices but not adequate for northern conditions. Finally the chief pilot put his foot do...

Re: Buses at the airport

They used somewhat similar busses to get people from the departure gate to the airplane and vice versa when all the air bridges were full at the Edmonton International airport years ago. But where do all the school busses come from all of a sudden when passengers have to use the escape slides during...

Once did Empress Alberta to the Messina NY border crossing south of Ottawa @ 100 ft. and 110 knots in a Cheyenne and it was a hoot. Did it in two legs. Empress to Marathon on day one then high level to Ottawa for the night. Next day from the Messina border to Marathon. Our company was chartered by a...

Re: IATRA validity

Correct me if I am wrong but I do believe if the airplane is configured to carry MORE than 9 passengers, not counting crew, the minimum crew in commercial air carrier operations is 2 pilots. So now any type rating on any airplane certified to Commuter Category (the 19 seat airliner) will freeze the ...

Re: Water Methanol Take-Off

The common expression used without water/methanol enhancement/restoration was "dry" take-off power or "wet" take-off power with W/M restoration. In the Metro 3, standard procedure for take-off was to stabilize power to 65% torque dry and then call for water injection whereby the torque would jump to...

Re: Another op bites the dust Island Express Air Suspended

It just may be an unfounded scuttlebutt but I heard that it is easier to get your OC back if you surrender it as opposed to having TC suspend it. May also be less lawyer time.

Re: IATRA validity

I believe that to "freeze" your IATRA, you have to have a PPC on an aircraft with an MTOW in excess of 12,500 lbs. I do not think a PPC/type rating on a Beech 200 will freeze your IATRA but a PPC/type rating on a Beech 300/350 will. Now that information is from the regulations in force a few years a...

Re: Can you see the windsock?

1000 ft. ???? I thought it was 10,000 ft. OOPs Oh Well! You can see it at night from 1500 ft. Look on the CFS and there is a wind sock symbol to show you where it is located. Look there. Also compare GPS ground speed (if you can) with airspeed on final approach to tell if you are in a head wind or t...

Re: Orca is no longer

Many years ago someone from southern Alberta tried to run Jetstream's out of Penticton but scuttlebutt has it that TC shut them down because of a lack of the airplanes lack of one engine inoperative performance and/or a lack of a one engine inoperative emergency plan. But Air BC successfully ran Jet...

Archie Trammell flies west

Just read from Aviation International News that Journalist, Author, Safety Expert and Weather Radar Expert Archie Trammell jr. passed away on February 05, 2018. He was 89. How many pilots have read his articles on what he preferred to call Airborne Radar rather than Weather Radar because it could do...

How many arm chair quarterbacks remember the NavAir Navajo on departure out of Comox? A blown gasket spewed oil on the turbo and the crew turned back to land. They did not make it.

Back in the good old days I was flying a Norseman on Elliot boards. One of the boards broke so they were replaced with some other brand of skis that were much narrower. On the Elliot boards the airplane handled like any other airplane which is to say directionally stable but on the new narrower boar...

Re: Watch Them Snowbanks

Not as much a landing accident but one caution is crossing windrows left behind during snow clearing operations. A windrow higher than 6 or so inches high will damage a prop and the engine, especially with a turboprop. Most twins have 10 inches of prop clearance under normal conditions. Some singles...

Re: Perimeter off the runway in Thompson

The SA 227AC Metro has hydraulic nose wheel steering to supplement nose wheel caster. There is an item in the Limitations section of the AFM that says do not arm the nose wheel steering if there has been a hydraulic system failure. Perimeter Airlines published an excellent article on negative caster...

Re: King Air flap question

OOPS, I was wrong. When selecting flaps up from full down, you have to select flaps up (position 1) and then when the flaps are at Approach, select position 2. My bad. Many moons ago on a PPC checkride, the candidate sort of fumbled the flap selection so we were advised to just select flaps full up ...

No oil cap per say on a Metro 3. Metro 2, yes but 3, no. Sight gauge with a ball floating in a small window. Open a small flap on the engine nacelle.

Re: King Air flap question

That is almost correct. To lower flaps to APPROACH, you select the flaps to DOWN and when the proper selection appears on the gauge, move the flap selector to APPROACH. Moving the selector to UP retracts the flaps. That is the system used in the King AIR 90, 100, A100, 200 Metro 11 and all but the l...

No one has ever mentioned the fact that maybe the comm radios were working just fine but the busy crew just tuned them out. They were cleared to land, had the runway in sight and in all probability saw the United flight clearing the runway. From the audio feed I listened to, my SWAG guess was that t...

Having been in both situations where the altimeter setting is below 29.00 and again when it was above 31.xx, there is no adjustment to the MDA/DH required. If the setting is at 28.99 or lower but within the range of their instruments, ATC/FSS will say the altimeter setting twice. If you can set it, ...
