Single Letter NDB Identifiers
Just a quick question. Does Canada still use the single letter identifiers for NDBs? I'm working with a DAFIF database (rather old data) and discovered that there are 4 NDBs around CYYZ with single letter idents. (R, X, T, and L). I don't see them on the VNC (and I dont have an IFR chart handy to co...

Jazz at CYKZ
Anyone know what Jazz is doing at YKZ?
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/JZA7083
I've heard 7083 and 7032 flight numbers in/out of YKZ today.

Re: Overlapping Airways?
Interesting...
So is there a complete list of air routes someplace? Or does one just have to find them on the maps?

Re: Overlapping Airways?
cpl_atc: thanks for the reply. Another question you might be able to answer. I noticed that there are air routes designated on the VNCs as "ARnnn". For example.. "AR30" from the Elliot Lake, Ontatrio NDB (YEL) that dont appear in the DAH. Are these for public use, or military only? (According the le...

Re: "When ready" - Stupid phraseology change
The change has been documented in an AIC... I suggest you take a look at them periodically: http://www.navcanada.ca/ContentDefinitionFiles/Publications/AeronauticalInfoProducts/AIP/Current/PDF/EN/part_5_aic/5aic_eng.pdf Specifically AIC 27/08 issued July 3rd: AERONAUTICAL INFORMATION CIRCULAR 27/08 ...

Overlapping Airways?
I was looking at the Designated Airspace Handbook tonight and noticed something peculiar. The DAH is the legal document that describes Canada's airspace. It defines all airspace from control zones, special use areas, classes A through F as well as low level airways. I noticed this oddity for LF/MF a...

at the risk of sounding stupid..
why do you need to calculate the suns true bearing? can you give me an example situation where this knowledge would come in handy?

Re: TSB Reports
Ask the TSB for a copy. They will give you one.
I wanted more information about a particular crash. The report wasn't available on-line, but when I asked for one, I got a paper copy. This also included the raw test results from items that were tested as part of the investigation (altimeter, etc..)

Re: Online Booking Software
My school uses http://www.flightschedulepro.com . Its pretty good.. You can book individual airplanes, instructors, set rules as to min and max booking times. You also get emailed when a booking changes (new time, delete, add, etc..) You can view the sched in multiple formats (monthly, weekly, etc.....

Re: Lets turn off the GPS
I'm a <200 hour pilot currently working on my CPL. That said here is my thoughts on GPS as a newly minted pilot. Map reading is just another tool in the arsenal for situational awareness and safety. The problem I see is that with everything else (when was the last time you practiced a precautionary ...

Runway Crossing Instructions.
Scenario:
You are cleared to cross runway 15/33.
Question:
When would the controller say "cross runway 15" versus "cross runway 33". Is it just personal preference? or is there a rule that states which runway should be stated.

Flight Plans Opening/Closing
I'm trying to figure out if/when Ground/Tower will open/close flight plans. I always make it a habit to contact the ATS unit that I specified in the flight plan when closing it. Sometimes when calling up to close the flight plan FSS guy usually says that it was already closed by ground. I'm assuming...

Re: Billy don't be a hero... amusing CADORS report from CYAV
This was always my favorite CADORS report: CADORS Number: 2002Q0757 Narrative: A flying object was observed south of the airport. The object appeared to be a wind-borne garden umbrella kept aloft by an updraft. The object was travelling southwards at about 1000 ft, and the St-Hubert police were advi...

Question about "H" Suffix on runway numbers
This might be the wrong forum to post, let me know if thats the case.
I came across an entry in the CFS for CYAW. The runway numbers are as follows:
34H/16H
10H/28H
What does the "H" mean? Is that for helicopter traffic only?
Thanks.

Re: Weather Briefing Question
I like AWWS because of the fact that I can get a hard copy of items such as notams, metars, etc.. Easier than scribbling it down over the phone. However, I do normally let the briefer know that I have most of the data from AWWS and that if there is any supplemental data that I should know about (ie,...

Re: Special VFR
Devastator, just a suggestion but, I think you'd learn a lot more about ATC by dropping by your local tower for a visit than trying to read your way through Manops. Thanks for the suggestion. I've already visited my local tower about a year and a half ago. I highly suggest that every pilot goes for...
