Re: The Air Canada OTS thread
I was a member on interview panels during external competitions for positions at TC few years back. Competition was keen as those jobs were attractive and did indeed get many interesting people, majority of which were well qualified beyond what was asked for. On thing that was always noted amongst u...

Please correct me if in error but didn’t airlines cancel their flights going in there on that fateful day.

Re: Air Transat YOW
Quoting the rookiepilot: "I know nothing about crew and commercial aircraft ops. By contrast few of you know much about running a business." I know and was acquainted with an AC pilot B777 who has a Civil Engineering degree and an MBA who runs his own successful Aviation Consulting firm on the side ...

Re: AC Lining Up with a Taxiway SFO...?
I am 110% in favour of a non- punitive investigative structure , it has LONG been known to increase aviation safety as compared to a 3rd world knee jerk reaction of finding blame and closing the books !!!! What I am NOT in favour is having investigators going out of their way to find fault with eve...

Re: AC Lining Up with a Taxiway SFO...?
Here is one non disputable fact: at the missed approach/go around altitude, the aircraft in question had attained sufficient climb gradient to clear the obstacles in front of it. If the ROC at the location of the first obstacle was 3 ft, 50ft , 100ft or a coat of paint, clearance was accomplished. D...

Re: AC Lining Up with a Taxiway SFO...?
Can't believe some of the tweets. 100 feet clearance isn't serious enough? How close would everyone like it? What if the engines didn't spool for any reason, instantly? Get real people. We are talking a matter of what a few seconds? Comedy hour here, except it's not funny.   On a...

Re: Halifax crash report coming Thursday
[quote="PositiveRate27"]Anyone who looks at this and just writes it off as "two lazy airline pilots mailing it in and screwing the pooch" is missing the huge red flag that should be a warning to all of us. Your commentary has merit in my view. Why, let me say this as a former IAP designer. We are pe...

Re: Halifax crash report coming Thursday
All in all a disappointing report. No recommendations and no safety action taken by Transport Canada. Basically back to our regularly scheduled programming. Perhaps one recommendation (if not in the works), no 1/2 sm vis credit via ops spec to any airline on NPA even with calculated vertical guidan...

Re: Transport Minister Marc Garneu
Some seem to forget or ignorant of the fact(take your pick) that aviation is just one of the four modes(Air,Marine,Rail,Road) a Transport Minister is responsible for. The Country's Transport infrastructure/systems doesn't revolve around aviation nor should it. Yep. I'd also love to meet one typical...

Re: AC blames Airbus for YHZ crash
forgive me if my memory is hazy, but I am pretty sure that YHZ used to have an ILS on 05...... But when the airport authority bought the new system it didnt pay for the option on that end. I recall there was a warmup time, as my F/O kept going the wrong way, and that was the excuse from the tower. ...

Re: AC blames Airbus for YHZ crash
Does this mean AC will be pulling their A320's from service since they believe them to be unsafe? Or was it only the one that crashed that's to blame? Hopefully, sometime this decade an accident report will be released. Only been two years so far, for an accident where the FDR/CVR were in...

Re: Approach Ban
There were 3 landing accidents in a relatively short span with light blue aircraft. (AC YHZ, Jazz YAM, and EVAS YQX) all involving landing in low vis so I'm sure some changes are coming. Hopefully it will be a simpler process instead of the flow charts my company currently uses. The minimums on the...

Re: Why does this approach have higher LNAV/VNAV minimums than just LNAV?
Correct, if a specific landing surface/runway is assessed as non-instrument(no survey) the lowest minima authorized is 500ft HAT, no matter what the procedure, even WAAS LPV. As mentioned there are good many examples in the CAP and more specific in the RCAP. If ROC + governing obstacle in the final...

Re: Why does this approach have higher LNAV/VNAV minimums than just LNAV?
Actually an Instrument Approach Procedure(including anything with vertical guidance) can be designed to any airstrip without any type of runway assessment, however the lowest MDA/DA/DH authorized is 500ft HAT. There are many examples where this has indeed happened, I did designs to such locations an...

Re: Why does this approach have higher LNAV/VNAV minimums than just LNAV?
LPV's provide ILS like precision, many with 200 and a half limits, and can be produced for almost any airport anywhere without the need for an expensive ILS installation - cost savings airlines could insist on to reduce their fees paid to NavCanada, airports and other national service providers. Th...

Shortly after that Caravan crash in Winnipeg few yrs back due airframe ice in which the pilot lost her life, I was contracted to do IAP designs and subsequent procedure flight checks for northern sites. I let it be known I will not conduct any flight checking in that aircraft type. There were some l...

The first two items under Findings indicates to me airlines/charter companiesof this nature shouldn't be in operation. I would hope the flight crew on this particular flight would have difficulty in employment prospects, this is just terrible, no other way to describe it.

Re: Air Canada Accident in YHZ
Rockie. A reasonable response for sure. Your airline has been flying A320 or variants of it for a good many years- would 20+ be close. This aircraft(variants) flys into Halifax every day of the year winter, spring, summer, fall. It has done countless non-precision IAPs to this runway(05) and others ...
