It's interesting to see as well some of the jobs asking for low time or just previous commercial experience for operating a Norseman or an Otter, even a beaver. Hopefully us float drivers will be able to have a bit of an edge in the next few seasons.

Re: Didn't know the RCMP had float planes?
The turbo beaver they had beautifully rebuilt landed gear down on a lake in I believe BC? Got rebuilt and is operating in Manitoba or Saskatchewn I think.

Re: Low time pilot looking for employment
+1 for the road trip. That's how I got my foot in the door. Gives the operator a chance to read you in person. Sometimes all it takes is to shoot the shit over a cold one, company and circumstance permitting. The road trip also gives you a chance to see the operation on the ground and meet the other...

Re: Life of a Float Pilot
Wake up at 0600. Head down to the lodge and have 3 cups of coffee during the morning debrief. Head down to the plane and fuel up or pump the floats if the dockhand is still in bed. Warm up, load up, get the turkeys on and go. Give the guests a run around of the camp. Load the outgoing group and repe...

Re: Algonquin 2 Year aviation program!?
I did the Algonquin program and it was OK. At the time I did it, the multi and INRAT were required for graduation but not the MIFR. You also had to do an elective and I chose float rating as that's the path I wanted to go down. It all depends on what you want to do. Confederation probably would have...

Re: Sea plane rating question.
It's been a long time since I read the requirements for the pilot giving the training and have had a hard time finding the #'s on TC website, but what are the minimum requirements for a pilot to give a float rating? I seem to remember something like a CPL and 50hrs PIC float?

Re: Dock vs. Ramp First Job
When I got my first job I had a few hundred on floats and sometimes I still felt like I didn't really know what I was doing. That's pretty lucky to have been able to rack up 100+ hrs on floats before even getting a gig. I was lucky enough in that I could build up some float PIC by ferrying floatpla...

Re: Flying in Red Lake, On.
Fishing rod is mandatory, leatherman, maybe some bug spray for starters. Dry feet are huge when you're up in the northern outposts for up to a week at a time. Good boots and lots of socks. a good rain jacket goes a long way. If you're looking for good priced pints check out the legion. A little more...

Red Lake was a fun place to spend the summer.Definitely way worse places to be. All kinds of operators around Howey Bay and don't forget to look into a few operators in Ear Falls aswell on the way to YRL.

Re: Why so little interest in tailwheel flying?
It really is too bad that tailwheel flying is on the decline. Bush flying is what made me want to enter the industry as a wee lad and a fair chunk of wheeled bushplanes are tailwheel. I've tried in the past to see where tail wheel experience is offered but that might need an update now. I think it w...

Re: Bush pilots emergency pack
I currently sport the Leatherman Rebar and use it multiple times a day. Whether a 'Leatherman' or 'Gerber' I can't stress enough how useful a 'multi'tool' is. I also spray painted fluorescent orange on mine to make it high visibility. Came in handy one day as sure enough it got kicked off the float ...
