Re: A lifetime of learning when to fly....

According to the FAA Airman’s registry, Mr Musk holds a PPL with Multi Engine and Instrument ratings, however his last medical was issued in 2000. I think it is highly unlikely he has been flying a L29 recently…..

Re: Comox WestJet + RCAF

Whoever parked the Herc may get a slap on the wrist (assuming they parked inappropriately), but ultimately it’s the pilots responsibility not to hit anything. From TP 312 Taxiway. A defined path on a land aerodrome designed for the taxiing of aircraft and intended to provide a link between one part...

Re: Can you take the PPL written before flight training

Have some time now to study, but don't have flexibility to do flight training yet. Can I do ground school and take the exam before flying? As was noted in other posts there are some requirements before writing. The huge thing to do ASAP is get a medical. You need a file no, ie license number, befor...

Re: Comox WestJet + RCAF

The picture shows the stopped 737 nosewheels straddling the yellow taxi line. I think the RCAF is probably going to own this one because they parked the CC130 inside the maneuvering area for the civil terminal ramp. “I was on the centreline, so it was not my fault.” I have never driven a 737...

Re: Teaching IFR Comm Fail Procedures

What prompted me to write this posts was a discussion I recently had with a IFR student. When I asked they would handle a comm fail they gave me a good run down on the ATC book procedures. However when I asked how they would troubleshoot the comm fail the response was "I would switch headsets". I as...

Teaching IFR Comm Fail Procedures

My experience is that during IFR training the subject of a Comm fail is often presented only with respect to the procedures to follow when communications are lost when flying under a IFR flight plan, and in IMC. These procedures are of course, important to know but I would suggest that more emphasis...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

Interesting. I definitely agree that an underpowered float plane (real or simulated) is a great training tool. I am not convinced though that below 100ft is a great place to troubleshoot a very rough running engine. Obviously if the alternative is certain death, try and keep flying it, but in the m...

Re: Canadian Registered Ted Smith Aerostar Down in Florida

I have about 500 hrs in the Aerostar. It has a rep as a hot ship but in my experience it is actually quite docile. It has no artificial stall warning system because there is so much natural stall warning. Single engine flight is fully controllable even at low airspeeds. The issue with this airplane ...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

In your last example, even if that pilot mindlessly rambled off all the actions he had been taught, and moved the fuel selector to both or right, without paying attention, the engine would have come back to life. I get the point you are trying to make. But if the pilot would have followed the full ...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

In retrospect I contributed to the derailing of this tread. Of course there are many excellent instructors who don't just teach the minimum to pass the test but on the journey to PPL add extra content and tips that makes them a safer and better pilot. So I apologize to those instructors for my disre...

You're spending time at the wrong FTUs then.
Sadly my personal experience is that the “right” FTU is pretty much a unicorn. I am told they exist but I have never seen one…..

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

We should be training how to avoid the failure in the first place before it quits. Spending a lot of time training how to avoid the failure in the first place is not a substitute for training how to deal with a failure that has occurred. I think it's an error to consider "how to avoid an engine fai...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

3) For every actual total engine failure there are probably 3 partial engine failures, yet this possibility is almost never mentioned in flight training yet alone actually practiced. It is actually a more difficult scenario as there will be lots of ambiguity as to what is happening and what is the ...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

Yet many light schools spend an inordinate amount of time on elaborate exercises to determine the "best" field. I tell my student Close, Open, and Flat in that order of importance, are the only things that matter. A 9 Gee deceleration from 60 knots to stop takes 25 feet. You can smash the aircraft ...

The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

How we train students for engine failures does not IMO reflect the reality of how engine failures actually occur in the real world. Specifically: 1) Looking at the accidents statistics approximately 2/3rds of all engine failures are directly caused by the actions or inactions of the pilot. The best ...

Re: How to build PIC/CX while an FO

Rent a plane. Realistically it's the only option at this point. I don't want to crap on you, but your story should serve as a cautionary tale. I have heard this story from A LOT of pilots: they get a job offer on a decent size airplane straight out of school. It's a great starting job until they re...

Rookie How I experience this forum and how you do seems to be quite different. If I had any beefs it is that it can be a bit boring, especially the interminable inside baseball discussion on the minutia around airline collective agreements. I think of Avcanada as like being at the company Christmas ...

Re: A lifetime of learning when to fly....

My experience generally mirrors Rookie Pilots. Most of the high achiever pilots I have observed applied the same discipline to flying as they did to what ever line of work that got them successful. They also were self aware enough to learn from their mistakes. The one constant however was time chall...

Here is his bio https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/cabinet/honourable-pablo-rodriguez There seems to be a distinct lack of any transportation related qualifications, experience, or even interest in transportation issues. The choice of this individual to the position of Transport Minister would seem to indicate...
