Re: Joining the RCAF at 37 years old
All I know is what happened in this particular case. He joined to fly F 18 and worked hard to do well in all aspects of classes. He came in top of class. They would not guarantee a position as an F18 candidate and maybe because he wouldn't back down they also told him he might not even get a pilot ...

Re: Joining the RCAF at 37 years old
Absolutely, maybe! If you meet all requirements (aircrew selection, fitness test, medical, etc) you can certainly join the RCAF and fly. First step is a recruiting centre. Some of what has been written above is true; you may be assigned to a platform/community you don’t want. Its all about timing. I...

Re: Pilot Shortage / Minimums /disconnect
Someone should tell OP that Carson just upgraded a 600 hr FO on the metro. And the race to the bottom draws near. If that’s total time, that’s just outright dangerous. Hardly. It depends entirely on the competence of the individual. I’ve flown with some 200hr pilots where I’d put my family onboard ...

Re: Help: Im stuck and can't decide what to do
Complicated question with lots of variables that are hard to predict. I’m a proponent of gaining qualifications beyond aviation if for no other reason than you may lose your medical. I’ve watched several colleagues go through it and it’s always worse for those who don’t have any accredited skills be...

Unknown. If you were turned away, it’s not just age but a multitude of factors, timing included. I won’t comment to current policy but look around for the latest news articles on military recruiting practices. It may provide insight. To the Op, What I can say is that the military has worked out exce...

Re: Advice for a 30 year old
The military has zero interest in 30 year olds, I don't know why it's in the conversation at all. They want you at age 18, not 30. This is patently false. We just put a 33yr old on the fighter track. He’ll be 35 or 36 before he’s on Sqn. The oldest student I’ve seen through Moose Jaw was 47. He’s fl...

For those who are interested... I applied in the past for a position in standards. I did not even make it through the screening process as I did not include the group 1 instrument rating wording..... It is a government process so don't use common sense or logic. Those who can bullshit the best win....

T1900 It occurs to me that if you know a bunch of people who got on quicky at TC, and their qualifications, you are probably part of TC. It certainly would explain why your perspective is different to all the others. Correct me I am wrong. You are wrong. Never so much as set foot inside a TC facili...

Re: Transport Canada
Funny,
I know a bunch of people who got on at TC very quickly after applying. Most were even given a choice between 2 or 3 positions. Some even lack a degree and aren’t bilingual.
Any other organizations that you’d like to complain about?

Re: Did I waste Time And Money?
I think the only person who can really answer the question of whether time and money were wasted is you. Did you enjoy playing flight sim? What else would you have done with the time and money? Groundschool is like any academic course in that a good instructor can certainly accelerate the process bu...

So what, precisely, are your qualifications?
How many hours total?
Multi-engine?
IFR?
Crew or Single Pilot?
NVG?
Hoisting?
Which operators have you flown for?
Are you Keith’s RW brother?

Re: Maximum glide
Short answer, it depends. What type of aircraft, what is standard cruising altitude (are you dealing with pressurization & potentially oxygen problems?), does the engine have a starter of some kind or will you need ram air of a certain speed to restart, do you need max glide or do you have excess al...

More expensive than F35, older tech than F35, fewer users than F35, less opportunity for development/growth of the platform than F35. Seems like the logical choice.......

Re: Where is this so called shortage
Can anyone else chime in on that aspect of selection? I may be completely incorrect. The centrifuge is awful, no doubt, but it's not the limiting factor for 99%. F-18 & Hawk pilots have to do 5G without the G-suit and 7.5G with G-Suit. Snowbirds have to do 6G without the suit, which in my opinion i...

The oldest successful student I have seen through Moose Jaw was in his late 40's. The oldest I have seen go fighters was late 30's. If it's something you are truly interested in I encourage you to harass recruiting until they provide an answer. As others have said, high-G environments are not the ea...

Re: Where is this so called shortage
Is the military really having a shortage these days? Apparently not enough pilots for the F-18s with the attrition. Read in the news today. I heard an anecdote that one is more likely to get in the NHL before becoming an F-18 pilot in Canada! Pay seems to be not bad, $80K. Tempting if I was 18-22 d...

Re: Death of Paper Maps?
Both have their advantages and EFB’s are certainly becoming more popular but paper is far from dead.
Paper doesn’t wash-out in direct bright sunlight. Paper also doesn’t care when it’s -40, unlike an IPad. I always carry paper, even if it’s just as a back-up.

Which aircraft? I’ll make sure to avoid flying them.
The OP’s statement was very poorly worded, but I’m pretty sure everyone here is in agreement on the general premise.
