Re: ATC Lifestyle Questions
I am in the Moncton FIR and I have been streamed for VFR. I have already been told that any future VFR courses are going to be National. After finishing the 4 months in-class in Moncton, if I get posted elsewhere like Ontario or further West, does Nav Canada help pay for moving expenses, or is that...

Re: ATC Lifestyle Questions
Locations are assigned. I've also heard a rumour that VFR trainees in other FIRs are being put into the National Pool which means you could finish VFR basic in Moncton and get placed in Boundary Bay. I don't think they're moving IFR trainees around. So, if you were IFR in a major centre, you probabl...

1. They don't. They'll tell you they do though, but they don't. Proceed as described above. 2. Controller's don't get moved around unwillingly. The new two-year program described above hasn't affected anyone yet, so it's too early to tell. I have no idea about FSS. 3. Depends on the unit/specialty. ...

Bombardier considers move away from Downsview
From TheStar.com Bombardier Inc. says it is considering the sale of a parcel of land adjacent to Downsview Park that houses an aircraft assembly plant employing 3,500 workers. But a city councillor is warning of a fight over any move that she says would violate a federal promise. Bombardier spokespe...

Re: Don't come to a complete stop on the runway with converging traffic
It happens in Canada as wel It shouldn't per CARs Part VIII Standard 821: 2.4 Separation of a Departing Aircraft from Aircraft using Intersecting Runways A departing aircraft shall be separated from an aircraft using an intersecting runway, or non-intersecting runway if flight paths intersect, by e...

Skiplane Groundloop
Pardon me if this is a dumb question, but can you groundloop a skiplane?
Or more specifically, do skiplanes have the same tendency to groundloop that wheeled taildraggers do?

2017 - COPA Board Resignations?
Is something happening with the COPA board (again?) that there are lots of resignations and many open seats? [quoteA third veteran COPA director has announced she will not be running for re-election in the coming year. Cheryl Marek, who represents Southern Ontario, will step aside, leaving two vacan...

Re: DHC-2 external stc
I was told once, from an old learned AME, that the DHC-2 was originally certified for an external load and that if you have the boat rack bars, no STC is required. I suspect the original certification for "external load" referred to a very specific canoe, but I never reviewed the paperwork myself. H...

Re: De icing
Is there anyone on here who could explain in plain language the conditions under which planes de-ice? I watch them all day and I have no idea what makes them decide to de-ice or not. I gather there are SOPs, but I've seen two airplanes depart within 5 minutes of each other, one painted green the oth...

I previously worked for an operator who had a Navajo available for charter at a rate of $1000/flight hour. I'd assume there's some (small) margin in there.

I had a great experience with them. Logged 50+ hours easily and cost effectively. I even flew GJAO before it crashed. I liked their operation, maintenance and access to the fleet. As for photofly's comments, I'm sure the lawyers will make money. I've seen TC mention this accident in their refresher ...

I'm awful at writing tests, I passed every one of them with safe margins. Study and work hard and you will pass. Slack off and you won't. There's a lot of knowledge you need to access quickly to do this job, but by no means is the knowledge base insurmountable. Also, there's LOTS of help to get you ...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?
Your faith in COPA is ... refreshing. Personally I'd like to see COPA successfully organize its way out of a paper bag. Then I'd trust it with something like you suggest. I'm not sure I was trying to convey my faith in them. It just seems to me that they would be the appropriate organization to spe...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?
Solution - PARTNERSHIPS are one of the easiest ways to bring the costs down significantly. I'm not sure why there aren't more partnerships (2-5 people) or flying clubs (6-20 people) around. Maybe there are and I don't know about em? Consider: Tie down - same amount regardless of pilots, can be spli...
