Or how about hours spent travelling??? 10Billion miles in cars at 60mph (average) = 166,666,666 hours / by 81 = 1 fatality every 2,067,613 hours driven. 10Billion miles in airliners at 400mph (average) = 25,000,000 hours / 2 = 1 fatality every 12,500,000 hours flown. Only problem with stats like the...

Re: One controllers likes and dislikes. Ask about your plane.

Ah the old comparison to the US... Very quick numbers off various websites. If you can do better research please do! USofA - 20,000 controllers (NATCA #'s) moving about 60 million "movements"/year in 3.7 million square miles of airspace. Canada - 1600-1800 (depending on the source) controller...

Am I a target of angst?

Funny, if everyone is so at ease with aircraft performance and controller abilities, WHY is this thread so advesarial?

Hm - Smells like dogshit, looks like dogshit...good thing we no step in it.

Re: One controllers likes and dislikes. Ask about your plane.

Interesting replies thus far. Now tell me, how does any of this fit into TODAY's environment where users are scrapping pillows and life jackets to save weight and hence fuel??? Is it really okay for others to burn more fuel so the dodgy old motorhome can block the left lane of the 401 during rush ho...

Re: One controllers likes and dislikes. Ask about your plane.

NO that's not what I implied at all. If you want to play with the big boys you've got to keep up (closely)..that's all. Taking half a province to level..well that's just plain unacceptable. The thread's original topic was aircraft that annoy. It's not that the good folks at ATC can't cope - its' tha...

Re: One controllers likes and dislikes. Ask about your plane.

But anyway, what I wanted to add. I'm a little disappointed that controllers are disgruntled with having to handle an airplane that does not perform the same as all the other airplanes they're handling. The people I work with on a daily basis, which admittedly are pilots , find it really exciting t...

Maybe nobody really cares but consider this a discussion towards my physcology degree or similar....bs... What exactly is so offensive to us about an airplane rolling down a hill, reaching flying speed, and then gliding off to a landing???? The most complicated bit of kit prone to failure on the air...

Not quite sure why all the Hedley bashing is required? I haven't read anything in his post anti-Canadian at it's core. Is it no longer okay to express a differing veiwpoint in Canada? You guys aren't all Harper Cabinet ministers in disguise are you? What is odd is that Canada still hosts an F1 race...

Re: Dead Stick Takeoff & Landing

I don't get it? What was "imprudent" about that flying? Gliders in Germany do it all the time - just an alternate means of aquiring flying airspeed. The tire tracks on the landing spit makes me think he practiced this once or twice instead of just going for it. About the only thing imprudent was mak...

Re: When are you committed?

"If in doubt - chicken out" rings in my ears everytime I do something "marginal" from what I was trained to do OR have done before (bad complacency aside). Seems to me the fact you went around AND lived to question it is all there is to say about the matter. You know more than anyone here what works...

Re: FAA lets aerospace firms certify safety of their products

In theory turning safety ultimately over to the insurance companies sounds solid - until you realize that payouts are a mere pitance to some of these companies. Actuaries play the odds of a payout - not the cost in human life. That plus any payout usually equals an increase in rates - something the ...

Re: Fly your IFR route as cleared

Sorry my bad. Conventional or /S won't be cleared PP direct - unless the navaid is close. Most controllers I know "allow" for /S if it's tight...ie. assigned headings. The post was aimed more at the boys with the fancy gear that think it's okay to go PP direct as opposed to "on course". If in doubt ...

Re: Fly your IFR route as cleared

Don't forget in this debate the "protected airspace" in a RADAR environment is only 5 or even 3nm! It doesn't matter if the pilot "thinks" ATC is watching our every move and basing sep on that - sometimes they actually expect you to go either PP direct or ON COURSE. Sometimes they do watch your ever...

Cat I read your many posts and I shake my head. Not at you - but at the total indifference to the possibility it may be true. Getting up there myself, but not enough to risk it all quite yet. There in lies the problem with any corrupt system - expecially regulatory or governmental. Too easy and fran...

Re: AirCanada Jazz ditches life vests to save on fuel

3 months out of the year you don't need a lifejacket - you need a friggin PARKA under your seat. Maybe they should take lifejackets out and replace em with parkas for the winter too - even if over "water" which is actually ice....or maybe not anymore due to global warming. Hmm how to fit a parka und...

Re: The "Merry-go-round" arrivals, and fuel costs....

I wouldn't be so quick to point the finger at the ANS or the airport authority. Runway Acceptance Rates and airline schedules rarely ever work in harmony. If you want true fuel saving efficiency, you need to look at much stricter slot times - instead of everyone wanting to land/depart at the same ti...

Re: Should I report this guy, and how would I do so?

Of course report it - absolutely! If it was innocent (power issues, RCMP plane etc) then nothing happens other than the pilot, IF they can find him, has to explain himself. Called being a responsible adult/professional. If it wasn't innocent, ie a moron or a drug plane - then maybe you've helped the...
