Re: Getting my PPL in Ottawa
I'm from Toronto, but I lived and worked in Ottawa over the summer. I already had my PPL, and did some night time building at Rockcliffe Flying Club. They were professional and fun to fly with. They also have a new hangar and 'building' going up that I get e mails about once and a while. They had a ...

Re: Trapped in KIAD
All I can say is that I will never fly United, and the turkey tonight was AMAZING...sorry... DC Man, I think I may have been on the same flight. UA operated by Chattequa or whatever, YYZ-IAD. ERJ170, bulked out the cargo, bulked out the overhead, 20 minute ramp delay. Everyone works in th...

Re: "1/2hr rule": Where'd it go?
To be quite honest... who cares. Are you saying you have never left your desk early or went for an extra coffee break? Planes in Canada make it from A to B quite safely in this country and as long as they don't all finish at the same time and take that 30 minutes at the same time we should not give...

2 Week PPL
Anyone heard of this?

Thoughts? Kind of puts my year long quest for a PPL to shame... Should I call bullshit?

Re: Trapped in KIAD
My dad has quite a temper. I was in on a bet with my mom as to if he was going to get arrested at Dulles or not. I said he was going to; and luckily I lost. Update: SAA has been great. United (as it was a United Express aircraft) didn't offer any vouchers of sort although he had no money to bu...

Trapped in KIAD
Long time reader; short time poster This is a little story for some advice, or a chuckle... My dad flew out of YYZ this morning on Chautauqua Airlines to Washington where he was going to catch a flight to South Africa. Turns out there is nowhere to put your carry on baggage in the EMB145, so he had...

Re: Medical exam question
Most of it is just questions.... History of diseases, medical history in your family. There is a urine test to test for sugars (I think thats what its for) He will weigh you, and send you for a chest x-ray, ECG and hearing test if you want a Cat 1 medical. Just did my CAT1, never got a chest x-ray....

Without a transponder, sorry. I'm not sure what ATC thinks about giving vectors to a primary target where as the plane could utilize DF steers if need be.

Re: DF Steer
A ton are being decommissioned as the true purpose of a DF can now be done by the ACCs with radar...It might still be useful for someone with a transponder though....

Re: Ultralight Over YVR
The first thing I learned here was the temper of many controllers. You have to be quite careful here and learn to recognise voices and their characters. It's always best to sound professional even if you're a PPL, RPP, or UPP pilot, and do the job correctly. I suggested this for the flight above. D...

Ottawa Tower
A big thanks if there are any people working in YOW tower for the tour and allowing us to sit in for a good 3 hours today. It's nice to meet the other people on the mic, and see what there thoughts on the goods and bads are. Much appreciated!

CYUL/CYMX
I'm flying out of CYRO (Rockcliffe) for the summer and would love to take advantage of it as much as I can before I return to CYKZ (Buttonville). I wanted to fly to either Mirabel, or Trudeau (Dorval - whatever makes your prop turns). Yes, it's a C172 - it's going to be an amazing experience. I will...

Re: Laser EYES
Doc, I knew of a person that got laser eye surgery, which resulted in some vision problems for night flying. I'm not sure how common this, and if it was an isolated case. They weren't major problems, I recall though he mentioned something with depth perception, only affecting him at night. Just a ca...

Re: Radar Coverage
Yup and YOW terminal is controlled from the YUL ACC just in case you were wondering. If you were planning above 4500 for sure you will have coverage the whole way. I wanted to shoot up to CZUL this summer and see if I could get a tour of the ACC. That's down the drain now though, as my car got stol...
