Re: Vote
Always entertaining when the people who don't understand an industry have such well formed opinions. Don't engage the pamphlet warrior. They've read a pamphlet and hence know everything about a complex and nuanced issue. What effect could everyone working from home and using giant server farms ever ...
Re: Vote
For the guys/gals who were there for the last vote, curious if gut feelings are different then the previous situation/vote? First time around there was a sense of uncertainty because it was all new. The company did a good job of creating fear. This time around, everyone is certain and prepared. I'd...

Re: Pilot Industry Afternoon
The lump sum replacement for the stock options is part of our compensation package and not a bonus. There is no uplift over and above normal pay contained in that payment. Additionally, the lump sum replacement for the stock option money is actually a reduction in pay from the stock options we used ...

Re: Pilot Industry Afternoon
The crazy part about AC is the lifestyle isn’t any better and the pay is lower. I have a friend on the A320 who’s making 55k/year doing reserve and 16 days/month. Meanwhile my friend at WJ with the same level of time in who is clearing over 70k/yr (with bonuses) and only working 12 days per month. ...

Re: Pilot Industry Afternoon
WestJet (along with all the subsidiary entities) have a compensation problem at the moment. Rather than addressing this with better pay and working conditions, it appears they are attempting to address the inability to recruit and retain pilots by hiring less experienced pilots. The training is free...

Re: WestJet Pilots are very transpicious!
Did you just refer to Alexis as "you people" Mr. Cherry? Clive was a "you people" long ago too as was David Neeleman, etc When's the last time an airline pilot made a good CEO? Based on the working conditions pilots throughout the industry agree to over and over again I'd take a hard pass on a prof...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
You know, I really like your perspective on that. It makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, that kind of perspective would need to come from the very top for that mentality to be adopted on a large scale i.e. C-suite. They're the ones who set the precedence for all departments to follow. I guess when...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
Username is on point. The US is a far bigger market and is an entirely separate labour pool as there is no, or very limited, labour mobility. Until that changes, you're wasting your breath thinking that they can be compared. That does not mean that Canadian airlines can't pay living wages though. I...

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
Court jurisdiction in Canada is a bit of a dog’s breakfast. The Superior Courts of each province (I.E. BC Supreme Court, Alberta Court of King’s Bench) actually have inherent jurisdiction over issues even if they concern federal legislation. The Federal Court has legislative jurisdiction to review ...

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
No problem, and to be clear, especially with this Management Group, I think that it is extremely unlikely that such an action would occur. When parties are in Collective Bargaining, s.50 of the Canada Labour Code applies. Section 50(b) outlines: 50 Where notice to bargain collectively has been give...

Shouldn't you be directing that question to the person quoting sections of the contract?Eric Janson wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 4:34 am Is the CBA still valid in the event of a strike? Just curious - don't work for WestJet or a unionised company.

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
Section 1.4 of the WJA CBA prohibits wet leasing to cover WestJet flights except for specifically defined situations. A labour distruption at WestJet is not defined in that section and therefore would not be a legal reason to have another airline (eg. Sunwing) cover it's flying. Encore could be for...

Re: Random Phone Call
Is WestJet an absolute dumpster fire right now or would it be something to consider? Is it worth coming over, or am I better off holding out for literally any other mainline? Honestly, and I'm not proud of this but, https://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/sharonherald.com/content/tncms/assets/...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
In my opinion, WestJet has never been just another "regular" airline if that makes any sense, with unique compensation and culture. I believe this is partly why the ALPA transition hasn't fully worked in its favor (yet). Perhaps still its approach ought to be unique and something that fits IT as op...

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
Aren't they hiring and getting more airplanes? WestJet has a bunch of orders too. It seems Sunwing can grow its fleet, if need be; no? You are asking if Sunwing can grow their fleet from 10 airplanes to 130 airplanes, hire and train all the required flight crews, ground crews, dispatchers, maintena...

I sympathize, I really do. That is not going to change by posting here, good as that might feel to vent. IMO there are 3 viable options to proceed for one who wants to effect change in their own destiny. NONE of these choices are easy or comfortable. All will take personal sacrifice. Is what it is....

Ok, Mach1, you've asked a polite question. I'll attempt to give a polite but direct answer. I answer in the context of one who hasn't worked on an hourly wage since I was a teenager. Near 40 years ago. Since then, commission, then my own business. Short answer, it doesn't diminish me. It's the atti...
