Thanks for the input guys. Like I said, not looking to skimp on things, I was just wondering if it was a feasible alternative. I'll still speak with our mechanic about it but suspect we'll just order the new windows from the usual suspects.
Cheers!

Likewise. Wonder what changed with the N model that would make it more susceptible to structural issues than the M. Other than 10 extra HP I don't know if there's much difference between the two.

Making new windows for a 172
The club 172 is due for some new side windows. These aren't overly expensive for airplane parts but will still be in the $700 range for all 4 by the time we've got them here (waiting on quotes). Which got me thinking: The side windows are just flat stock plexiglass/acrylic cut to shape. That isn’t a...

Suck it Boeing. 4-0 panel decision in Bombardier's favor.

Garmin D2 Charlie. Hard to get more pilot-y than a watch that has an airport database and moving map GPS.

Re: Bombardier considers move away from Downsview
YZD, in its current form, is strictly visual approaches. Company traffic always comes in from the north and either performs straight in approaches on 15 or a right circuit to 33. I think there is a published approach for 33 that come in from the shoreline but I've never seen it done. When we had the...

I'm actually impressed with how well the plane held up. It made it through all the block and even broke down the poured concrete portion of the wall.

Re: 1 in 60 rule to find GS without being given distance?
We're missing at least two pieces of information: Distance to the beacon and relative heading. Assuming you meant 8 degrees change, the rate of change in relative bearing would be fastest if you're passing directly abeam the beacon, and slower the more you're heading towards or away from it. What a ...

Re: 4 Hurt in Plane Crash at Brampton
Must use vasi at night. 2 white, 2 red all the way down, will keep you safe. Though I'm not sure how dark it would have been to need that, or what Brampton has for vasi lights. Question from someone working on their night rating: How adamantly do you follow the VASI/PAPIs? The reason I ask is that ...

Re: how do kids afford this racket???
Worked full time during the summer, 20-25 hours a week during the school year, lived cheap (no alcohol, smoking, bars, shopping, etc), earned some scholarships/bursaries, graduated (2011) with no debt and enough money in my pocket to move to my first place of work.

Re: I knew they should have backtracked
Intersection departures are the norm at many airports across Canada. If it’s safe to depart a 2500’ strip, I’m not buying that it’s unsafe to depart halfway down an 8000’ runway. The mistake was the low level 180, not the intersection departure. My home airport is 7000' with a midpoint taxiway and ...

Re: iPad Mini 4 and ForeFlight
I have a Mini 4 (can't remember what size) and use FltPlan Go. I'm only a renter pilot and don't do long X-C flights so all I need is my local charts. The iPad is paired with a Dual XGPS160 which has amazing position resolution. If I do a minimum radius turn on the ground (one wheel locked) the GPS ...

Re: Air France A380 engine failure
The failure in it's self isn't concerning, it's where did all the missing pieces go? The other engine isn't far away, neither is the wing full of fuel or the cabin full of pressurised air and people. The fact that it's an uncontained failure vs a simple "it stopped working" is the scary part. I'd f...

Air France A380 engine failure
Landed in Goose Bay after engine came apart over the Atlantic. Looks like the whole fan departed and took the cowling inlet with it. http://cdn.images.dailystar.co.uk/dynamic/204/photos/226000/620x/Plane-engine-blows-up-648875.jpg News articles right now are standard click bait "HORROR IN THE AIR" b...

STC's are available to cover just about any LED swap (Nav, beacon, strobe, taxi, landing, etc). I believe some are even PMA replacements, no STC required.

Re: Clearing Turns
I shoulder check. In the Cessna I'll lift the wing to look under it.
The only time I've NEEDED to do steep turns is to avoid large birds. Not exactly time to do clearing turns and checklists when you're trying to avoid a collision.

Re: Use the tree to cushion the landing
That's one hell of a tree. I want the spars of my next plane made out of whatever that was! Every watch rally racing through a forest? Anything more than a foot thick is, for all intents and purposes, an immovable object. In this case the tree probably saved a lot of potential injury, as it looks l...

Re: A biplane can bring you down
I've gone through the wake many times while being towed in a glider, both as demos for students and while moving from high to low tow position. At 2-300 ft it's a rough ride but not alarming if you're ready for it. Still, some heavy aileron input can be needed to keep things stable. Being in the cen...
