I discussed my (umbilical) hernia with my aviation doctor, who recommended one type over another as being a better long-term fix. I forget what the terms are, but the repair I got put a reinforcing piece in (mesh?) for the flesh to grow onto and help reinforce the area... The simpler fix is to just stitch up the tear, which takes longer to heal and is prone to further tearing.

I seem to recall that he told me that when I could pull the airplane out of the hangar I could fly. Seemed fair. But listen to your doctor. And this advice may not mean anything if your hernia is in a different location. :)
