Gonna go out on a limb here and say YUL apron control is to blame

Maybe because they spoke French on the radio? LDA numbers in French?

How did apron control and speaking French cause this accident?

I like how this forums has become so fawking boring that we refer ourselves to other forums to discuss aviation accidents.

Good Job!

AvHerald is not a forum but the place to get the most up to date facts on aviation incidents and accidents. No hearsay is posted other than what might be found in the comments section.

I find it in good taste that NO ONE is posting any comments on this issue. There is no need.

We are all professionals, and as a courtesy, (because it could have happened to any one of us, and we know it), we give our fellow professionals every benefit of the doubt.

DP out.

Not to make excuses for West Jet, I have no dog in this fight, but how many flights do they have a day and how many excursions have they had. Do the math and express the result as a percentage, then compare that with other carriers to see how wj stacks up.

I recall 2 runway excursions. CYOW ILS 07 and this. Are there any others I'm forgetting?

Well jjj, since LDA was mentioned and I wasn't aware of whether or not there were notam's in effect, I thought maybe it was a repeat of Abbotsford.

There sure were a lot of selfies being taken as people exited the aircraft.

So now that some time has elapsed, would this have been more likely a failed attempt to make the turnoff at the end of the runway vs an actual landing overrun?

Putting all the silly comments aside -- once or if the light aircraft drivers graduate to the heavy metal maybe then they will appreciate how critical runway conditions are to heavy jets and how tricky loss of direction control recovery can be - FEDEX published a very good circular on the dynamics of hydro-plaining and recovery procedures - even at taxi speeds it can happen - if then it usually turns out a captain needs a pee-pee whack -- now this is just a wild guess from me looking at the photos but slippery runway could very well be the cause -- so pay attention -- you might find yourself in the same situation someday if you ever get past the ho and van stage --

Well said. It's not a fun feeling, especially the first time it happens to you and can induce a panicked response.
Was the FEDEX article a public document? I can't find it, but would like to add it to our library.
