Maybe because they spoke French on the radio? LDA numbers in French?

Not to make excuses for West Jet, I have no dog in this fight, but how many flights do they have a day and how many excursions have they had. Do the math and express the result as a percentage, then compare that with other carriers to see how wj stacks up.

So now that some time has elapsed, would this have been more likely a failed attempt to make the turnoff at the end of the runway vs an actual landing overrun?

Putting all the silly comments aside -- once or if the light aircraft drivers graduate to the heavy metal maybe then they will appreciate how critical runway conditions are to heavy jets and how tricky loss of direction control recovery can be - FEDEX published a very good circular on the dynamics of hydro-plaining and recovery procedures - even at taxi speeds it can happen - if then it usually turns out a captain needs a pee-pee whack -- now this is just a wild guess from me looking at the photos but slippery runway could very well be the cause -- so pay attention -- you might find yourself in the same situation someday if you ever get past the ho and van stage --
