With freezing drizzle in the area I wouldn't want to be in a caravan, I hope the pilot is safe and just waiting rescue right now

Reports that it's in one piece, no fire or smoke. Hopefully the pilot was able to put it down safely on a lake.

I heard from some members that aircraft turned around due to icing and did not make it back to pickle, landed safely on a lake and pilot is not injured.

I once had a scare in icing in the same aircraft. Learned a lot that day. Made it back but thought I was gonna have to put it down in a logging cut. Thankfully that didn't happen. Hope the pilot of this flight learns from that and keeps it with him/her for the rest of their life.

You learn defiantly learn a great lesson from something like this. A great lesson in when NOT to go. Glad the pilot is safe!

Hopefully every new caravan driver remembers this and tindi a cpl years back (sounds like same conditions), and don't put themselves in the situation in the first place.

Hope that the pilot is OK. Spent a lot of years at Wasaya with a lot of great people.

There is a big red and white placard on all Caravans that aren't certified that says "Flying not permitted in forecast or known icing conditions". Any of you new Caravan drivers, don't be afraid to go point at that sign to your base manager / ops manager / whoever is saying "Oh well why don't you go try it out and see what the weather is". Like someone else above, I had a nasty flight in icing in the Caravan that taught me a lot because I thought it was OK to just "go take a peak". It is never OK in a Caravan. The pop and chips can wait.

Fly safe folks!

So where did the info come about the pilot being safe on a lake if wasaya is stating the condition is unknown? Info like that gives this site a bad rep ...

From what I understand all they know is the plane appears to be in one piece on a lake. The condition of the pilot is unknown but I hope they are keeping warm. 9 hours can be a long time to wait in the winter.

Gotta wonder about Wasaya's dispatch/oversight process. There's a long, sad, list of fatal accidents involving Caravans in icing; reading Wasaya's press release, it sounds like the weather system didn't just jump out at them - its fairly widespread. Why are they dispatching into crap wx? (Gotta admit, I haven't looked at the metar/tafs, tho...)

eta: Glad to hear that the pilot is OK.

We were going into YTL this morning and we were one I of the aircraft trying to contact 127.
First off, if he's okay, that's great news. He did the right thing turning around and landing while it was his choice.
Second. We almost missed YTL, 12 miles or so from his destination. YTL was reporting 300 OVC all morning, so I was shocked a Caravan would have been dispatched in these conditions. More later.

For the people who do not know the c130 does drop a radio that emits a extremely loud noise for the pilots or survivors to recover and this gives them the ability to talk with the c130. no where does it include that they have established contact and with the ceilings so low no one can jump to the site.
