Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
Off the runway, right side gear failure perhaps?
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
Its a Conair CV580 Tanker. Heard on the news that pilots survived, although they didn't say if injured.
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
News reports say the pilot had a medical emergency during the landing.
Looks like a write-off.

Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
"During the landing approach, the pilot suffered a medical episode and the co-pilot had to land the plane. During the emergency landing, the plane veered off the runway and into the ditch."
It will be interesting to find out the details of this one.
The degree of incapacitation. Where it happened on the approach. How long after the incapacitation did the First Officer realize the Captain was incapacitated.
If the Captain passed out below 500' AGL VFR, and it was a subtle incapacitation, I could see this accident easily happen.
No flare, hard hit on nose wheel, nose wheel fail or porpoising.

Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
There is no tiller wheel on the right side of the aircraft. I wonder if the co-pilot switched seats before landing?
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
This will be interesting to read what happened. I've only flown 3 different types with tillers, and all types can be taxied without it, albeit pretty difficult. Not so difficult to land and maintain center line though, that's pretty simple. I wouldn't be surprised if the medical emergency caused control inputs, like a seizure, which caused the plane to depart the runway. I really hope the crew is okay.

Pretty sure this is what happens whenever Co-Pilots are allowed to land. Don't let Co-Pilots land airplanes.

I trust you wrote the above in jest?leftoftrack wrote:Pretty sure this is what happens whenever Co-Pilots are allowed to land. Don't let Co-Pilots land airplanes.
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
That's bit of a loaded observation though when CRM turns to mayhem over the PIC medical issue, and looking at a few accidents listed an FO landing affected by other types of distraction ... if too many setback at once going on the flight deck.
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
I used to fly with an old left seat tyrant"the CP", he didn't let the first officers fly. 16 months nothing but radio work, then handed controls ten back cause he was ill. Then was chastised for the approach.... Later i was talking to mx, giving them the skinny" bump left gen voltage a bit, slow in this system etc.... The DOM said put it in the book, when i replied fo's were not allowed he said with that attitude you'll never be a captain... Unbeknownst to me the owner had come up behund me. I replied I'll never be captain flying 6minutes a year either. The CP was read the riot act, every other leg was mine, andthe CP was out for my blood. I left 3 months later.
Re: Alberta Firefighting Aircraft Down
I hope the pilots is alright.
You know you made it in life when you fight each other not to fly.

"C-FEKF, a Conair Group Convair 580, was in the descent for landing on Runway 25 at Manning, AB (CFX4) when one of the pilots became incapacitated. As the other pilot took control of the aircraft and performed the landing, directional control was lost on the rollout. The aircraft departed the right side of the runway and travelled across a ditch, approximately 3000 feet from the
threshold. The nose gear collapsed and the fuselage broke into 2 sections. There were no injuries, however the aircraft was substantially damaged."
No info on the altitude at which the incapacitation happened or whether or not there was any flight control interference from the incapacitated pilot.
