St Andrews, Manitoba plane crash Sept 7, 2017

#1 Post by J31 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 5:36 am

RCMP officers responded to a plane crash Thursday morning near St. Andrews airport, just north of Winnipeg.

Mounties confirm the crash happened shortly after 4:30 a.m.

A heavy police presence could be seen in the area all morning. The Transportation Safety Board confirms it deployed investigators to the scene.

Highway 8 is closed in both directions from Parkdale Road to McPhillips Road. There is currently a detour in effect.

There’s no word on injuries or where the plane was headed to or from.

Emile Courcelles was driving along Highway 8 and tells Global News the crash site appeared to be in the ditch on the east side of the highway.

This is from the Winnipeg Free Press (link below). Looks like quite the impact. It's hard to judge what aircraft it was, but to me, it seems like a lot of wreckage for a 172. Also, you don't have too many 172s flying at 4:30 am.

Musketeer. The force of the impact resulted in the engine being about 500 feet away from this pile of debris, no prop, no mount.

That's a high velocity, high angle impact. Too fast for a stall/spin type accident.

Pilot experienced, known to owner, stolen airplane, 0430. Form your own conclusions.

C-GURS, a privately registered Beech A23-19 Musketeer, departed Winnipeg/St. Andrews, MB (CYAV) at approximately 0410 local time. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft collided with terrain near the airport. The pilot, the sole occupant, was fatally injured. There was no post-impact fire and no ELT signal emitted. A passerby alerted EMS, who responded to the scene. CYAV's ARCAL lighting system was not activated prior to departure, no radio calls were made on the Aerodrome Traffic Frequency (ATF), and no flight plan was on file with NAV CANADA. TSB investigators were deployed. RCMP has publicly stated that the aircraft was taken without the consent of the owner.
