Watch Them Snowbanks

#1 Post by pelmet » Mon Jan 01, 2018 6:39 pm

That time of year. A little higher over the threshold might be wise, especially in flat light. Hard to say what happened in the second incident.

C-GXDF, a privately operated Cessna 172K aircraft, was on final approach during a local flight to a private aerodrome located 9 nautical miles North East of Porcupine Plain, SK. Just before the aircraft crossed the runway threshold, the landing gear struck a snow windrow, and the aircraft overturned on the runway. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was not injured. However, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.

C-GTUE, a privately registered Piper PA-12 aircraft was conducting a local flight at Sioux Lookout, ON (CYXL) with 1 pilot and 1 passenger on board. During a stop-and-go landing on Runway 34, the aircraft veered to the right. The aircraft struck a snowbank and came to rest, upside down, approximately 100 feet south of Taxiway Alpha and 30 feet east of the runway. The occupants were uninjured. The aircraft sustained damage to the engine, propeller, right wing, rudder,
windshield, and tailwheel.

Not as much a landing accident but one caution is crossing windrows left behind during snow clearing operations. A windrow higher than 6 or so inches high will damage a prop and the engine, especially with a turboprop. Most twins have 10 inches of prop clearance under normal conditions. Some singles have even less.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.
