They actually went down in very flat land at some distance from mountains, but on a plain that appears to be about 7000 ASL, pretty well all farmland.

From every story i've read on this so far:

"the plane crashed in an area rutted with canyons"

The first report I saw said between two towns about 25 miles apart, Monticello Utah and Dove Creek, Colorado. Then it became, from Colorado news, "near the town of Delores", which is about 25 south of Dove Creek. Now back in Utah, and crashed half an hour after takeoff.

Still a high plain, but more rolling hills.

Reports seem to be of snow at the time, or at least when the search was on.
