On the tower audio, the aircraft - a super decathlon - is cleared for takeoff runway 15, and declares a MAYDAY a few seconds later. The callsign is clear, but I don’t want to publish it.

C-GDLP, a privately registered Bellanca 8KCAB, was conducting flight from Buttonville Municipal (CYKZ), ON. Shortly after take-off from Runway 15 at CYKZ, the pilot declared a Mayday with ATC, and the aircraft entered a right hand turn. The turn then steepened and the aircraft entered a nose down attitude before colliding with the ground in a field approximately 500 ft west of the departure end of Runway 15. The aircraft was destroyed by a post impact fire and the single occupant was fatally injured.

Something about runway 15 there.

Cirrus augured back in 2010ish? Brutal crash. Not a lot of real estate to settle into should you pop a jug.

Heard some unconfirmed rumours of a structural failure.

Possibly related to this...

But as I said....unconfirmed.

Rwy 15. Has to have, without a doubt one of the least friendly takeoff options of any GA airport I can think of in case of emergency.

Accident report out....

https://tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/ ... 8O0096.pdf

Student pilot, although he had been illegally accumulating flight time which had exceeded 100 total hours over several years. Like many reports, no definite cause but there were 'irregular engine noises' and contamination in the fuel injection system by an oil product. Yet, "the amount of contamination identified did not appear to be sufficient to significantly affect fuel flow or power production".

An emergency was declared and it appears that a turnback was attempted and the aircraft stalled but it is unknown from what altitude the turnback was initiated. The aircraft was seen in a steep bank and control was lost.

It has the hallmarks of a partial power loss followed by a loss of control during a turnaround.

There is an interesting report by the Australian accident investigation board about managing partial power failures...
https://www.atsb.gov.au/media/4115270/a ... 55_no3.pdf

I states near the end.....
"If you feel yourself wanting to stretch the glide, tighten a turn, or maintain height, check the airspeed indicator. If the airspeed has bled off from the glide speed, lower the nose, reduce bank angle if in a turn and re-consider landing options."

This guy didn't have many options if power was not available but there is a parking lot and grass field 45 degrees to the right if the departure path. Perhaps unreachable as well. But if you have decided to do the 180 back to the airport and discover that it doesn't look like you will be able to get turned around, it may be time to roll wings level(or almost level) and take what you get(unless it is something really bad).

Sure sparse on pilot info. No age. No autopsy.

Ok. I see he was 46, a doctor, and a very experienced mountaineer.

Probably the highest risk demographic for pilots. Educated, driven, and inexperienced.
