The area where the plane stopped -- called an engineered materials arresting system
Pueto Plata, in the Dominican Republic had something like that in the apron area decades back when the ground crew marshalled one of our DC-8-63's across. The plane sank through the thin pavement, into the sand, and was there for a couple of days being dug out. Fortunately, that event had nothing whatever to do with a landing nor takeoff! Good design at Burbank!

I think a lot of these were mandated at shorter strips, instead of an extension.
