Slid off before take-off, so presumably this happened at something close to taxi speed? RWY 15/33 is still NOTAM'd closed due to disabled aircraft.

Slid off runway 15 in the vicinity of the threshold turn around bay while taxiing during the backtrack for takeoff.

From LiveATC ... the aircraft reported, "the turn around point here is completely iced over and, we were taxiing at maybe 2 knots and just slid right off into the dirt".

Shortly after the incident a Boeing 727 that had just landed advised, "recommend to put extreme caution on the ATIS for taxing, it really is deceptively slippery".

Interesting that it was so slippery with the temperature above freezing for around 8 hours prior to the incident.

What the hell is a "near-dangerous incident"?

My thoughts exactly. The media will literally try to sensationalize ANYTHING!

Not from Canada? The air may have been above freezing, but the ground was not. As soon as that rain fell onto the frozen pavement, it turned to ice. Happens all the time. That's why highway travel is more dangerous in the Spring months.

It was very slippery that morning. Driveway on a slight angle and I could start at the top, give a little push, and just slide right down to the bottom like on a skating rink. Kids thought it was great fun.

It's considered impolite to refer to an aircraft's disability in a way that makes it seem a negative characteristic. The current preferred terminology is:

functionally challenged

N896SK, a Bombardier CL-600-2D24 CRJ900 aircraft operated by SkyWest Airlines, was conducting flight SKW4811 from Saskatoon/John G. Diefenbaker Intl (CYXE), SK to Minneapolis- Saint Paul Intl/Wold-Chamberlain (KMSP), MN. The aircraft was backtracking on Runway 15 for takeoff and, during the turn around near the edge at the threshold, the flight crew lost directional control and the aircraft slid onto the frozen grass. The nose landing gear and the right main landing gear departed the maneuvering area. There was no damage to the aircraft, or to airport property.

There were no injuries reported. The passengers deplaned, and were transported back to the terminal by busses. The aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron, and the operator's maintenance proceeded to inspect it. No damage was noted, so the aircraft was returned to service. At the time of the occurrence, Runway 15 edges outside the 100 foot centreline were reported to be ice covered
