The Ditch in Tofino

Post by pelmet »

The name makes it sound like a tight landing area, is it?...…..

C-FPML, a float-equipped Cessna 180F operated by Westcoast Wild Adventures Ltd, was on
approach to "the ditch", a water landing strip adjacent to runway 11/29 at CYAZ (Tofino, BC). The
aircraft's right float struck a metal post on the land immediately prior to the ditch and the aircraft
overturned in the water after touching down. The pilot was not injured but the aircraft was
substantially damaged.

Having flown in and out of the 'ditch' at YAZ many times....

Its pretty straight forward. A bit narrow for some I guess. But any competent pilot should be able to land a 180/185 or beaver in there on a day with reasonable winds. I cant remember exactly, but we sort of had an unwritten limit on crosswind for it though.

Not sure how of why they struck a metal post.

Iv'e also landed and taken off from the one in Barr river too..

Yeh, same here I used to use it quite often with my 185 and found it to be no problem.
