Re: Dash 8 vs. hail (Zambia)
Great job to the crew. There's virtually no information on hail and severe thunderstorms, especially during pilot studies from PPL to ATPL. No weather reports or onboard radar. With this type of weather, pilots are basically on their own. Bravo.
Re: Dash 8 vs. hail (Zambia)
So hail doesn't show up on weather radar? Or the other precipitation surrounding it?
How about Mk. 1 eyeball?
Dash 8's have perfectly usable Wx Radar installations...
Honestly unless they were really stuck in a hard place, and they had to go through it - I'd say the airframe deserves more kudos than the crew.

The overwhelmingly religious resgination in the comments on that page shows how out to lunch some of the population in the area is.
Not gonna speculate yet as to why those guys elected to do their approach right through a severe storm, but jesus.... wtf.

Re: Dash 8 vs. hail (Zambia)
I guess some of you don't fly in the tropics.
Thunderstorms are a normal part of flight operations. Preferred option is to stay on the upwind side if avoiding but that isn't always possible.
Hail (ice) doesn't reflect radar energy very well so your Radar is useless for detecting it.
Hail can be thrown out of the top of a cell and travel away from the cell as it comes down. A lot of hail encounters are in clear conditions - a hail shaft isn't always obviously visible.
The post talks about a lightening strike - the paint being blasted off the fuselage certainly looks consistent with that.
The report doesn't say they flew through a CB - just be aware that heavy rain in the tropics will also show red on the radar. Not always easy to determine if there is or isn't a CB present.
It will be interesting to get more information to get a clearer picture of what happened.

Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find in this business

Simply a well built aircraft and some test pilots.
Re: Dash 8 vs. hail (Zambia)
Passengers are always left "fearing for their lives" regardless of the intensity of anything non-routine. Is it possible the WX Radar was inoperative? Minimum fuel situation? Hot date awaiting at destination? Anywayze, the Dash-8 is robust.

That'll buff right out
