CHAA Harvard Wingtip Strike Geneseo

Post by pelmet »

C-FRWN, a Canadian Harvard Association Mk2 was conducting an airshow demonstration as part
of a formation of 4 aircraft in Geneseo airport (D52), NY. During landing as the aircraft decelerated,
the tail wheel touched down and the aircraft veered left departing paved runway into a cornfield.
Right hand wing tip touched the ground and the owner reported damage to right hand wing tip,
aileron and spar. There were no injuries reported.

I heard once many years ago that the outboard aileron hinge on a Harvard was the most often damaged part on the Harvards, and that they were becoming scarce as hen's teeth. I wonder if someone was able to have another batch of them made at some point or if they continue to be rare (and even more so now)?

Looking at the videos , it it very apparent that the aircraft ground looped towards the corn. The input of the flight controls tell the tale.
This is the fourth incident in 4 operating seasons for CHAA
3 groundloops causing much damage and one engine overspeed.
It’s apparent that CHAA is having some safety / procedural issues that need some serious review .
As on late they seem to be fairly leaderless
The President is nowhere to be seen and the poor VP is doing his best to keep thing together with the little experience that he has.
CHAA is a good organization but in it’s history has just never seemed able to elevate itself from an amateur group to a professional organization.
What they really need is someone with real Warbird world experience to step in and reorganize / Lead the group.
Unfortunately CHAA barley generates enough income to keep some of the aircraft going let alone hire someone to run them.

Fleet16 is bang on.

They don't have the common courtesy to call or email you back if you're interested in joining their organization to help out. Very unprofessional. A lot of great, experienced heavy tailwheel pilots in their own backyard have inquired also with no response. It's a shame to leave these great sticks in the dark. Nothing against the current pilot pool, i'm sure they're a very experienced bunch but most are big airline guys who maybe don't keep up their stick and rudder skills like they should. With the incidents over the last few years, maybe they should reevaluate, get some young blood in there and spruce things up.
