The CBC is reporting:

The article suggests that the pilot was not found with the helicopter...

Very unfortunate. It was a new aircraft to the operator. Hope they can recover the person and machine.

This a very unusual helicopter. The design goes back to Germany during WW2. There are 2 intermeshing rotors each on a separate rotor head. No tail rotor. I watched one for several days doing power line installations in Arizona a few years ago.

I’m sure there’s an obvious answer, but I can’t see it. How would you get a type rating in a single seat helicopter like a K-max?

How would you get a type rating in a single seat helicopter like a K-max?
Kaman, who also made the lesser known, but numerous "Husky" for the US military, maintains a civil one for pilot training. It's more or less the same type of helicopter, though two pilot, and a generous cabin.

That is where I saw one too for the first time. Seemed so strange at the time.

A jump seat attached to either side for maintenance and training flights.

Just kidding, that didn't really pan out, nobody wanted to ride external.
