Iran's Transport Ministry said, that there was no emergency. According to tower tapes the pilot aborted the approach when he could not establish visual contact with the runway at decision height and went around indicating they wanted to return to Tehran.

The 727 lost height and impacted on farmland to the southwest of the airport in darkness/heavy snow/and fog. None of the crew are listed among the 33 survivors.

I heard that the Iranians are blaming the Americans for the crash because of the trade embargo that they cannot buy parts. Wow if that isn't the lamest scapegoat.

Kowalski: Sir, we may be out of fuel.
Skipper: What makes you think that?
Kowalski: We've lost engine one, and engine two is no longer on fire.

The B727 involved in the crash had been delivered new to Iran Air in 1974 - 6 years prior to the Islamic Revolution - and embargoes that followed. The accident aircraft had just completed a 'D' check in December 2010.

I feel sad for the Persian people living under the current regime, and I in no way confuse the politics of the Iranian Govt with the Persian people.

So I've not read any official statement blaming US embargoes on the crash, obviously with embargoes - the aviation infrastructure and aircraft are suffering - who is responsible - I don't know?

As for the Iran Air airbus, certainly not the first airliner shot down, the USA ship believed an attack was imminent from a Iranian F-14 Tomcat (Iran F-14A had recently shot down a Iraqi Mirage F-1) and were definitely a threat - and in the area.

There is a MayDay episode on the downing, it took 8 years in the International courts for America to pay the passengers families - though they did so without apologizing.

It is also widely believed that the bombing of Pan AM 103 7 months later, was in part retaliation for the downing of the Iran Air.

Well hell, if the French can blame them for the AF Concorde crash I guess anything goes.
