Jan 10/2011 Owned by Safair operating for Africa-Air Charter - Boeing 737-200 ZS-SGX at Hoedspruit Air Force Base Airport South Africa.

Whilst taxiing for departure runway 18 in darkness, the pilots apparently missed a turn onto taxiway "Charlie". Upon realizing their mistake, they tried to turn the 737 around on using reverse thrust. During this maneuver the aircraft ran backwards beyond the edge of the taxiway and rolled down an embankment into the bush. There were no report´s about any injuries on board.

:smt040 I rarely post airliner stuff unless it's a major accident or Canadian content.

The B737 above was reported on all the airliner accident sites - JACDEC, ASN, Aviation Herald.

But I appreciate the ribbing!!! :smt040

WTF!!?? Those "roads" barley classify as a taxiway. He really missed the mark. Whats with all the trees?

If a pilot walked into a forest and had to make a decision, and no one from AVCANADA was there. Would the pilot still be wrong?

Location of Accident

Captain was a high time retired South African Airways pilot. The B737 missed a turn to the runway at night, in pouring rain - when they came to a dead end they attempted to turn around using the reverse thrust and misjudged the turn.

Hoedspruit Air Force Base civilian side is known as Eastgate Airport, the airport is in the center of a 25 square kilometer game reserve. The military keep 3 cheetahs on the flightline to keep the other wildlife away!!!, airplane/animal collision decreased by 90 percent with the addition of the cheetahs.

On the same day as this B737 accident, another B737 that took off earlier - had a birdstrike in an engine and had to make an emergency return landing.

As a military airport, the strange taxiways lead to underground hangars.

The runway at Hoedspruit is also an emergency NASA shuttle landing site.

Too cool. I'd be a little worried doing my walk around in the middle of the night though....

DITHOLO, South Africa -- Capt. Jenny Christian gets up close and personal with one of three cheetahs that roam the South African flightline here. The cheetahs keep the runway free of small mammals that sometimes wander in the way of landing aircraft. Captain Christian is deployed from Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England.
