From the picture it appears to be a Fugro Airborne Surveys machine.

I have been relatively lucky in my 15 or so years in aviation to not have lost anyone that I knew well. Today, that changed, as far as I have been told. My deepest condolences to the families involved. Very glad to hear 2 survived. At least there's that.

Something was wrong for sure. Not often do you see both engines feathered and not developing power at the crash scene.

Having no knowledge of this aircraft myself, anyone flown one? How would it handle with 1 engine out and all that sensing stuff hanging off it?

the survey CASA's do alright on one engine, because the only payload you haul around is the survey gear, which is under a thousand pounds, Fugro uses special WAT data to acount for the extra drag. If you ferry the plane loop off it cruises around 160kts, loop on you survey at 130-135kts. the worst thing is ice, if you get in ice the wires will start to shake really bad and it gets scary very fast!

A little more on the story. I haven't quoted because some may not want to read the details if they are grieving for the victim.

Not necessarily. In order to get a Garret on the start locks (flat pitch) - you need to pull it into reverse during shutdown in order to catch the start locks. Otherwise when oil pressure goes to zero the blades will feather.

Of course - It's possible the crew may have known they would not make the airport and could have pulled both stop and feather knobs, making a deadstick landing.

his employees were doing a survey when they ran into trouble and hit the emergency button.

I'm familiar with the survey industry but I've yet to hear this term thrown around. Is the "emergency button" a Fugro thing or is it just more newspeak? -ELT perhaps? Satellite warning system?

All the best to those affected.

It's newspeak trying to talk about this:
http://www.skytrac.ca/pg_SolutionsFlightFollowing.php

There is a "Mayday" switch you can activate while airborne. It will trigger an emergency respond plan within the company.
This activation is the end part of some check lists after a drill has been completed. An engine failure being one.

It has nothing to do with the ELT, which has it's own separate activation switch in the cockpit.

News Article click here
Investigators have discovered evidence of possible mechanical failure following a fatal plane crash Apr. 1 in Saskatoon.

A team of Canadian and U.S. investigators will be accompanying the plane engine to Phoenix, Arizona later this month to conduct further tests at the engine manufacturer’s facility.

On Apr. 1, a CASA C-212 twin-engine plane apparently malfunctioned over the city and crash-landed into a sound wall near Wanuskewin Road.

Two men survived, but Iaroslav Gorokhovski, a 47-year-old geophysical equipment operator from Embrum, Ont., died at the scene.

According to Transportation Safety Board of Canada regional manager Peter Hildebrand, investigators have found metal shavings in the oil of the right engine, pointing to possible mechanical failure.

“We found a bit of it in one of the engines,” Hildebrand said in an interview Friday.

“That still needs a fair bit of follow-up.”

However, the other engine also reportedly failed before the crash. Investigators have no idea why at this point. Hildebrand said it’s extremely rare for both engines to fail, as they function independently. He said there is no indication weather or human error played a role in the crash.

In the next two weeks, a Canadian investigator, an American air safety investigator from Washington, D.C. and company officials will accompany parts of the plane being sent to Phoenix, home of the engine’s manufacturer, Hildebrand said. He said the American officials are involved because the engine was manufactured in the U.S., but Canada will maintain control of the investigation.

“We keep control of it at all times,” he said.

The Phoenix facility can perform additional tests on the engine, such as observing and testing while it’s running.

It’s unclear how long it will take before the investigation wraps up. Hildebrand said it could take up to a year.
