Re: Chilean military Casa 212 crashes in Pacific Ocean
This airport, SCIR, is only 2900' long and 50' wide. It is very remote, 345 nm from Santiago across the .. I wonder how they get fuel there. And we wonder about the scarcity of alternates in the north...
After checking it out on Google Earth, I can see a wharf in town where they must get resupplied, but the road from town to the airport (which I estimate to be about 12 km long) goes right across the crest of the mountain range of this volcanic island.
This place suffered an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake February a year ago, followed by a giant tsunami, and the accident flight was on some kind of reconstruction mission.
No scheduled air services there as far as I can find. And now they are left with the aftermath of a serious aircraft crash. It is heartbreaking that an accident would happen on a "humanitarian" flight.
